What about ninjas?
Ninja would distract you with his throwing stars, no need to charge at the enemy.
Fixed.
Do you insist, that Ninja's throwing stars weren't killing machines made by most skilled blacksmiths in the world?! You're trying to say, that something made by Japanese wasn't the best of the best of the best?! You'll burn alive in hell! (if it's possible...)

Irrespective of whether it it is common, the game is going for accurate and it's accurate that jumping and smacking someone on the head with a giant axe works better than swinging said giant axe sideways from a standing position.

Actually it doesn't. Not unless you can violate Newton's third law.

Take a stick. Swing the stick. Now jump, and swing the stick.

Observations. Science runs off them.

It makes you vulnerable. While in the air you're easily knocked off course by anything coming your way, be it a horse, person, or missile. Jump attack = vulnerable = dead very quickly.
