So apparently, after the 140 (approximately) rockets that were fired at Israel during the weekend, the government decided to take action, a big one. The military chief of Hamas was assassinated and more than 20 bomb-weapon-rocket facilities of Hamas were targeted in the initialization part of the operation. Currently it is not certain that there will be a direct ground assault, but it is highly possible. I guess we will see.

Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz approved an expansive strike against terrorist organizations in Gaza. The IDF has damaged the terrorists organizations' long-range missile capabilities, updates to follow

Date: 14/11/2012, 4:30 PM    Author: IDF Website Editor
5:35pm: The IDF has targeted a significant number of long range rockets sites (over 40km) owned by Hamas. This deals a significant blow to the terror organizations' underground rocket launching capabilities and munitions ware houses that are owned by Hamas and other terror organizations.

The aim of targeting these sites is to hamper the terrorist organizations' rocket launching and weapons build up capabilities.

The Gaza strip, has turned it into a forward base for Iran, firing rockets and carrying out terrorist attacks against Israeli citizens.

The IDF will continue to target terrorist sites that are used to carry out terror attacks against Israeli citizens.

4:30 pm: In the past hour, the IDF targeted Ahmed Jabri, the head of Hamas' military wing, in the Gaza Strip. Jabri was a senior Hamas operative who served in the upper echelon of the Hamas' command and was directly responsible for executing terror attacks against the State of Israel in the past number of years.

The purpose of this operation was to severely impair the command and control chain of the Hamas leadership, as well as its terrorist infrastructure. This was a surgical operation in cooperation with the Israeli Security Agency, that was implemented on the basis of concrete intelligence and using advanced capabilities.

The IDF will continue to target sites that are used for carrying out terror attacks against the citizens of Israel while improving their daily security.

IDF Spokesman, Brig. Gen. Yoav (Poly) Mordechai, said that IDF operations began following the "intolerable situation in the south of the country, and seeks to harm terrorist organizations operating in the Gaza Strip." During the night, IDF Chief of Staff Gantz approved the detailed plan. All options are open in order to seriously damage Hamas and other terrorist organizations."

Yay, Israelian propaganda!

Got to know about this incident just a few minutes ago. Maybe Israel will now actually invade the Gaza strip. Would have both advantages and disadvantages, but I think it could work out well (for those region's standards).

Well at least the Hamas guy is dead. Not that it will make a difference as there will be another nut to replace him.

I thought Hamas and the other parties were ready to negotiate on cease fire, was that before or after the military chief was allegedly assassinated?

This is impossible. Hamas is a democratically elected freedom fighting force. Surely this is just a ploy to get embroiled in the Syrian civil war and push the Iranians into the sea?

I heard tail of rockets being fired into Israel. However I never found out if  it was a official Hamas action or a spin off group or even a different group.

The cease fire negotiations news came out after the rocket attack.

Yup: http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/Flash.aspx/254575

According to Channel 2, the Gaza terrorist organizations who have been firing dozens of rockets into Israel have agreed to a cease fire following negotiations with Egypt. The terrorists agrees to stop firing rockets as long as the IDF agrees to end their retaliatory military strikes.

The Isreali's barely keep in their contempt for the Beta Isreali's (and tried to give nukes to the White Rebublic of South Africa), I doubt they would be to pleased having to ally with brown people across the pond.

Ground attack would be justified at this point. Too bad Israel is prone to doing civilized stuff like shooting people with phosphorous rounds.

And in the end, it'll never end the rocket attacks.

Not to mention covering their windshields with live children.

As opposed to strapping bombs with a remote detonator to children and sending them into outposts.
Both sides are ****ed in the head.

I say, let them duke it out, those who are left standing can own the land. Just to finally end this ****.

Yeah, at this point it's really down to villains versus slightly more dickish villains. They've let the extremists set the rules of engagement, and that's just putting it into a death spiral.

An unstable region governed by a terrorist organisation, which itself is in a struggle for domination with other terrorist groups. On the risk of you being sarcastic, im gonna point out that there are a number of players within gaza with different motives and different ressources, yet none have total control.

Edith: Technically a terrorist group doesnt control a territory, but in lack of a better word and considering that they are trying to push for political change via terrorist means, the term seems to be the most applicable.

Any action, be it military, diplomatically or economically that further destabilizes the region is pretty much like cutting yourself. The terrorist groups require continuous conflict to gain recruits, funds and general support among the local and global population.

Things are going badly.

"We recommend that no Hamas operatives, whether low level or senior leaders, show their faces above ground in the days ahead."
