Hello everyone!
We prepared this thread alongside the 2 patch logs (one shortened and a full version), to give a little bit more insight on the changes and their intended impact.
With todays patch (actually a "hotfix") we have introduced a lot of new weapons, hundreds of item and perk changes and a lot of small improvements. These changes are based on community feedback (notably the meta thread of hairless, ogl and others, but also the many other topics in the forum from all of you), the analytics from the last few patches and obviously my own experience. While these changes are very Skirmish focused, there will be a more dedicated Captain mode balance + content update, but that is pending a little bit until we address the Rambo issue with game mechanics.
Have fun reading through all of this!
What's going on currently?
Right now shock troops reign in public but also competitive play. Together with cavalry they are the highest impact troops - while archers, heavy infantry and skirmishers are on the back foot.
These changes are trying to put those three weak classes more into focus, without taking the fun and sensible impact away from cavalry and shock inf, but rather making those more risky, high skill classes.
First of all there were a lot of overpowered perks, reducing damage taken for this class. Basically all 2nd perks gave some sort of damage reduction. Now there is (in most cases) only one dedicated damage reduction perk, while the other ones stay as obvious damage upgrades but lose the damage reduction component. Also some shock troops saw a hike in price (or armor) dependent on the faction and individual performance they had. Actually most of the weapons stayed around the same power level, only some nerfs to the voulge and other weapons have hit some classes. The actual nerf next to the removal of damage reduction, was the reduction of their combat movement speed. Not making them slower overall, but rather slowing them down once they are inside of an engagement / fighting (swinging their weapons, blocking), this will make it much harder for them to backpedal out of predicaments.
Also their price in public gamemode has been very slightly raised.
Javelins, Throwing Spears and the Throwing Axe have been buffed overall. Actually there was a hidden buff to all 1st perks of skirmishers giving them extra damage with javelins. That has been removed, but still overall the damage buff to those missle should now be greater than that hidden one. Expect them to make a bigger impact on the battlefield again. Otherwise some of the useless perks have been revised and prices have been adjusted regarding the troops power level.
Right now seemingly a very low impact class, on the scoreboard at least, but surely the backbone of any successful skirmish team. With the skill perks they have been given new tools, especially to counter cav, but only very few ones to actually best other troops in melee fights.
Now with the overall introduction of more melee focused perks (like Melee Expert), an overall buff to many underperforming weapons and a better perk layout, you can expect heavy infantry to be proper beasts in melee encounters. Also their combat movements speeds have been increased across the board.
This class has seen many changes in the past and is also seeing a lot with this set of changes. In Mount&Blade cavalry will always be a high impact troop and it's not our goal to change that, but rather make this impact scale with the player's skill. You will see a lot of nerfs but also buffs in the changelog for this troop type as a result of that.
Light cavs now use their cultures Long Spears on default, making them less reliant on infantry spear drops. The Line Breaker upgrades for light cav dont grant Lances anymore though, leaving those exclusively to heavy cavalry. Instead thses perks grant newly created cavalry spears.
Heavy Cavalry now have lances on default, leaving those pesky spears to the light cavalry and infantry plebs. This obviously resulted in some shift in their perks and weapon balance.
But also the mounts have changed. There have been some balancing changes to under-and over performing perk mounts, but also general changes. The barding of all heavy cavalry classes (and some light ones) has been lowered, but also all horse hitpoints have been increased. This will not make mounts more fragile overall, but rather punish you more for staying inside melee fights. Basically be more aware of cutting weapons and getting stuck in melee encounters now. Actually also still be aware of Heavy Infantry with the Cavalry Breaker perks, but maybe a bit less than before, since their bonus damage coming with the speed bonus have been halved. The raw extra damage to horses stayed at +100% though, so dont get stuck in! Undoubtedly they will still be able to punish you, especially by stopping you in your tracks, But deal less ridiculous damage with their spears on high speeds.
Also noteworthy is the change to couch lance, that now disengages more easily if your mount loses speed. And talking about speed, all horses have been slightly made slower.
Archers have had a hard time intervening in fights, because the turning speed nerf has made it really hard for them to properly track their targets. This penalty has been reduced drastically. Also for their classes there have been very obvious choices for perks, leaving them with very little freedom in their equipment. For that I went over every bow in the game and completely revamped the perks and most default bows for archer classes. Especially light archer classes will find themselves with a much more useful selection of perks.
Now all upgrade bows are loosely based on a “stronger bow” variant of the default bow, so all of them are dealing more damage, but give bonuses that should serve each archers playstyle. Are you more of an melee archer, that prefers to be close to the melee and able to draw your bow quicker, or do rather have an advantage from a distance with faster projectiles or better accuracy?
Sadly one of the known issues is that the release speed of the bows/xbows is not displayed in the armory as of yet. So right now some of the “Distance” bow upgrades might not look great on paper, but do trust the descriptions, they actually do shoot further and faster projectiles.
Outside of the bow changes, which also feature a lot of new additions and a complete removal of duplicated bow meshes, there have been some changes to melee focused perks for archers. So if you are a melee focused archer, the new perks that combine a better melee weapon + a shield, with your low damage but fast drawing bow, is the one for you.
Also the speed switching between melee and ranged weapons (after releasing) has been increased!
We are aware of the current ping and fps problems. Be assured that we are looking into it and the making of this update didn't take any resources away from that process. Please keep the discussion in this thread balance and mechanic focused.
