how about a simple cross? but one that looks as if the player marked it on the map. something simillar to this maybe?

I like this one, not as blocky but keeps and has an original / crisp look to it.

I think the one that you settled for looks really good and would suit PoP.

In my opinion it's too much like a teutonic cross. Doesn't really fit the atmosphere.

edit: i changed the world map a bit for my own, i could not get the farm plots on it, to worke right. you have to use a map editor i think..
And some terrain_far / background stuff for battle scenes, textures on trees, bushes. i will upload some pics into the screenshot section.
Maybe you get even more inspiration from it.
