I'd love to see some buffs and debuffs on the troops in battle depending on the campaign map situation. If your army has marched 3 days in the desert non-stop they should be exhausted and easy pickings for cavalry.
Maybe have a march time modifier, and restore it when waiting or standing still (the ability to make camps would be amazing). This would take into ac**** the food as well as unit type and the weather/season.
This could also affect desertion. If your troups are tired and abused they won't really want to stay with you.
