This is something we have some experience with from our previous title, Mount & Blade: Warband, so we are fully aware of the value of including our community at this stage of development. Our preparations have been proceeding quite nicely and we thought it would be a good idea to share what we have been up to in this period.

[/parsehtml]Read more at: http://www.taleworlds.com/en/Games/Bannerlord/Blog/116

It sounds like you guys are making progress, that's good!

...It'll be 18 or more months before there's a singleplayer beta, though, won't it?

Considering they had a 25 minute demo @ last year's GC I think your estimation is a bit off. I have never heard of a game that was revised 3 (or maybe even more than that) times on different fronts, went for an internal beta, then closed beta etc. etc. just to scrap the whole thing and start fresh yet AGAIN. Games like that just run out of money or backers, simple as that. I personally wouldn't mind if there is no SP demo/BETA at all. I'm not even much of a MP guy myself, but I know for sure it will keep my interest much longer than a SP demo/BETA ever could.

Why can't we release the game early and finish it with patches? And the players are happy and you can make patches for another 20 years! Isn't that easier? Waiting for release on Gamescom, and still ready to become a beta tester of your game!!!

"the game is far from feature and content complete" together with "its almost harvesting season" makes me confused. Its like they say "yeah we need a year or two more for completing the game, but it will be out by the end of this summer".
I mean WTF, im actually disturbed a bit . . .

There's no way the game will be out this year, never mind this summer- Gamescom is in the last month of summer (though I guess you didn't mean it literally)! We'll be lucky to get a release date, and I'm sad to say that I doubt we will get one. Beta testing is only just starting now, in its earliest stage; the whole testing phase is likely to take several months. Warband multiplayer beta testing lasted about 9 months; although the combat is very similar to previous games, there will be new bugs and balance issues to address. I think that the way feints have changed in particular will lead to a lot of balancing work. New game modes and maps will throw up unforseen problems (they will of course expect issues, but they cannot know what they all will be in advance and what to do about them until they are tested by large numbers of 'real' players for an extended period of time) Then there is the more prosaic stuff; getting servers working reliably, ironing out bugs in the new matchmaking stuff. It won't be a couple of months of beta and then they release the game.

As someone who has only really played multiplayer over the years, I'm glad to hear we will get to play the game in a form of a beta, but it would appear to me that maybe we're heading for a multiplayer release first followed up the singleplayer whenever it is ready, that is just wild speculation but the wording in the dev blog suggested that it was far from complete?

It seems this may be the case, question is if it’ll be released as a DLC you have to pay for or a free update. Even if they lower the price of the multiplayer and say the single player costs the same if they were released together, the playerbase would be in a riot if they have to pay for single player. This is a dangerous road.

Please no, I don't want to pay full price for a game I have to wait ten years o actually be able to play. Been down that road before, most people lose interest before the full game ever gets finally released. I'd rather wait another 10 years (slight exaggeration) for a complete game that blows my expectations away then "have it now" but not actually have it.

@ DanAngleland- all of that, plus the fact they haven't finished SP yet. I'd say we're looking at another year at the very least, more likely 11/2 to 2 years imo.

I could be misremembering, but I'm pretty sure they've said they want to avoid releasing the two at different times at just about all costs, and I agree. Just like releasing the game half finished and then doing updates to finish it, this would alienate a good part of the player base, lead to less sales overall, and cause the game to die out sooner. Even though most MP and SP people never really cross paths, having both sides of the game being played at the same time increases the likelihood someone who's never heard of M&B will find it and check it out. If they release a MP version only first, there are plenty of people who would probably not look twice as they are only interested in SP games, and when the SP portion rolls out they'll probably say "oh look, now they're trying to cash in on SP. Should have just stuck to what they're good at", even though the SP was probably the main draw for those of us who already know about M&B.

What throws me off is why theyre doing beta now if the game is "far from complete"? That leaves a few options:

1. Beta is actually far away.
2. We will have beta for a long time and possibly get burnt out (at least on combat and/or mp) before the full game even releases.
3. We will get beta for a time, and get cut off like a drug addict and have to wait for full release.

I think that sentence was best left out of the blog, or at least follow it up now seeing the confusion it created.

It would be too optimistic to expecting reverse of that :/

The game is far from feature complete yet harvesting season is close? 1+1=0?
It would seem to me that most of the reason he said “far from complete” would be the many people who think that TW has an all-but-complete game sitting on their laps and aren’t sharing it because they’re perfectionist to a criminal fault.

Beta is starting. That’s a lot closer to release than we used to be. But it’s just not done yet.

Major features are yet to be completed, and everything needs polish.

Now go do something else while you wait or you’ll just be sitting there going mad because you’re not playing yet.
