A 3D artist or an animator might be constrained by technical limitations or by the particular engine that a game is using, but a concept artist can let their imagination run wild. Combining their research, their artistic sources, and their own skill, they explore new aesthetic possibilities and lead the art of a game to new territories, effectively pushing the boundaries of what a game can offer (in visual terms) to its players. In this week's entry in our blog about Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord and the team behind it, we talk with our concept artist Ali Eser, who created (among other things) the faction banners, many castles, interiors, clothes, and armours. When you look at some impressive-looking armours from Bannerlord: it's very likely that it started with Ali thinking, "hey, this would look cool in the game!".

[/parsehtml]Read more at: http://www.taleworlds.com/en/Games/Bannerlord/Blog/61

What do you think a castle is?

you are thinking about medieval stone castles. Bannerlord has several factions from different parts of the world, including the desert. Adobe material is used to control the temperature as it varies wildly from day to night, and the thickness of the wall is essential for this control (confort). It is a lord's hall, not the castle itself. Not all fortifications will be built the same (look at Battania blog).

Now unless there's been some horrendous mistranslation, this building is Identified as the keep. Any musings of "if it was the lords hall" are irrelevant, because it's the keep. You could have a lord's hall within the keep, or somewhere else, but this building in it's entirety is called a keep. Therefore it should fit the criteria

so? Just because it is called a keep it doesnt mean every single faction should have 10 meters thick walls, on a bunker 50 meters underground, ready to take on a nuclear missile.

What if a Battania keep is built from wood? Other factions will have appropriate designs to the place in the world where they are from.

In the desert you want to survive the weather

now if you want to calculate the appropriate thermodynamic thickness for that keep wall to keep the temperature under control all day and night, then we could talk about if it is too thin or not. Waiting on your calculations :shifty:

I don't think it's very thin. I tried to position player's camera angle according to last picture, on concept art of the building. The interrior is bigger than it seems, and walls are probably 1m thick.

By the way I said this before but let me say it again, medieval people were mostly illiterate rude people with stingy mouths.
Today we try to put things under categories in order to simplify things but for them they did not worry about fitting to a one specific category. The only thing important for them was the usefulness.

The word ''keep'' was never used in central asia in medieval times as it is an english word but what word else could TW use in order to describe the place where the lord and his troops accomodated inside the castle ?

Adobe is really a useful construction material in steppe. Even in central anatolia, let alone central asia(in which terrestrial climate is the case even more), traditional houses are made of adobe because it keeps inside cold in summer and warm in winter. It is easy to make. You cant find stone or woods in everywhere especially in steppes but you can simply mix mud and straw and craft adobe.

All things said, Khuzaits appear to be a newly settled steppe people. They obviously dont consider castles to be the places primarily meant for the things applied for the western europeans. I am sure they prefer ground battles over siege battles.
Accomodating is important both for Europeans and Asians but it is just way more important for Asians because of the terrestrial climate.

Battanians will use dirt and wood to make their castles.

Based off this you should be yelling at Taleworlds for making **** castles.

However, this is a design choice to show Battania in ruins.

Remember, this is a FANTASY game, and not realistic.

If they use walls of 1-2m thick then more power to them. The Material is not the issue, the thickness is.

And please, stop using the Illusory truth technique, it's too effective. I'm starting to wish it was a bannable offence.

Are you saying that glass walls and steel walls of the same thickness and size are going to be very comparable when hit with a massive rock?

Not every fortification was built having shower of rocks in mind. Simply keeping those other guys and their arrows on the other side was enough for the longest time in some regions. I won't be ashamed of my ancestors because they were okay with bunching couple of logs together and no one thought 'yeah, okay, that may be useful against other Slavs and their warbands, but what about the catapults, guys?'.

I really like the keep design, because it gives decently Khuzait vibe to me. As some others said, it's easy to build and protects against the elements, should present protection against the raiders and bandits as well. As for the proper siege warfare... well, I guess if you let siege engines march into your domain then you've been khan-ing wrong. Being trapped in a single place like a bunch of rats doesn't sound like something on everyday menu for them either. Of course this cannot be properly represented by gameplay mechanics and the sieges will eventually happen to them. But, imo, doesn't mean that every culture's buildings should stand the same chance against storming forces.

First problem, as mentioned before, the ceiling doesn't look well supported, though I'm guessing walls are cut away and maybe they'd fix it.

But more importantly, the exterior walls are too thin. If you're making any kind of serious fortress (especially since this is meant to be T3), you need walls that are at least one metre thick to survive seige engines and ideally you'll want two.

The balconies should provide a larger degree of cover to people shooting down.

I am unsure of the technological feasibility of the central decoration above the fire, and tactically it's a mistake.

everything mentioned in the design philosophy of castles seems to be contradicted by this picture.
If I were on a date with you I would shoot myself in the moment you say hi

:meh: it's nice to see blogs like this and everything that go into alot of detail but honestly a real production blog would be nice I know it's the (not telling everyone where it is at) that keeps people watching and waiting but I think saying how far along the actual game is would bring minds to ease this long into production....these are true fans that have waited since the game was first announced years and years ago....

Actually with Bannerlord, marketing would probably benefit from divulging large amounts of info. At least until half the mentioned features are removed and Tale Worlds devs are branded liars.

Let me try to make this clear.

Point of art work is to show how the interior and exterior might to look like. So that it is easier for 3D modeler to create something. It is not a god damned plan of the building. If it was , you would be seeing numbers and arrows all over the god damn art work and not arrows explaining how it should be designed with rugs and fabric.

It is the 3d modelers job to take that art and make something from that.

So , stop going ape **** over every god damn thing.

Yes Rainbow dash, but only if they're both 10m wide and underground to defend against the nukes.

Why are you so combative? I swear its only a matter of time until you start to complain about how sky is the wrong shade of blue.

Hello, Callum! Hello, friends!
Guys, I missed you.

Callum, and who draws the trees?
And how do they look now?
Welcome back!
This dude is on a mission or something about the trees dude. I swear. But , he is right. We should have devs report us their progress on the trees. And it should be on a different dev-blog series along with the one they currently have. To the point where they have every leaf correctly according to its biological shape , veins and thickness etc. It was his first point after all.
You think I am joking or making fun of him? No I am not. I am dead serious.
