A 3D artist or an animator might be constrained by technical limitations or by the particular engine that a game is using, but a concept artist can let their imagination run wild. Combining their research, their artistic sources, and their own skill, they explore new aesthetic possibilities and lead the art of a game to new territories, effectively pushing the boundaries of what a game can offer (in visual terms) to its players. In this week's entry in our blog about Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord and the team behind it, we talk with our concept artist Ali Eser, who created (among other things) the faction banners, many castles, interiors, clothes, and armours. When you look at some impressive-looking armours from Bannerlord: it's very likely that it started with Ali thinking, "hey, this would look cool in the game!".

[/parsehtml]Read more at: http://www.taleworlds.com/en/Games/Bannerlord/Blog/61

Flora is essential to gameplay experience. That's why Polished Landscapes was such a popular mod.

First problem, as mentioned before, the ceiling doesn't look well supported, though I'm guessing walls are cut away and maybe they'd fix it.

But more importantly, the exterior walls are too thin. If you're making any kind of serious fortress (especially since this is meant to be T3), you need walls that are at least one metre thick to survive seige engines and ideally you'll want two.

The balconies should provide a larger degree of cover to people shooting down.

I am unsure of the technological feasibility of the central decoration above the fire, and tactically it's a mistake.

everything mentioned in the design philosophy of castles seems to be contradicted by this picture.
If I were on a date with you I would shoot myself in the moment you say hi

He wouldin't say hi. The first thing he is going to talk about is how the color of the castles is the wrong color, about the size of the boots being unrealistic, and how people during the medieval times didn't wear santa hats so it should be removed from the game.

Wasn't Duh clear enough? either discuss the specific point or don't post at all, continuing flaming others rather than engaging in a mature discussion wears everyone down.

Yaga! Good to see you again!

+InnocentFlower, yes keeps were generally built first, and frequently were built out of wood originally since it was cheaper and faster, then when more time and money was available, they were upgraded to stone. A very similar thing could have happened here, an original keep built out of a simpler, cheaper substance (adobe) and, when the outside defenses were upgraded, the keep was re-imagined as a palatial home. As I said earlier, a tier 3 castle most likely means you've accrued enough wealth and power that you A) can afford to build a fancy keep instead of a fortress-type one, and B) hopefully the outer defenses+your reputation on the battlefield+whatever natural defenses your castle has are enough to keep anyone out.

This, but also Yaga never was just like 'I h8 tress, plz change', he provided the devs with lots of good feedback, including very precise descriptions (bar the language barrier) of what is wrong in his opinion, photos and whatnot included.

I've provided specific feedback (IE walls are too thin, should be 1+ metres) and anyone can find their own photos if necessary. I have been blunt, but my feedback is informative. There should be no problem with that.

I don't really understand why some of you have so much of a problem with feedback and information.

Oh, I don't really have a problem with you, I was just providing my point of view on the issue of wall thickness in my post about it. I don't agree with you, but I don't think that makes your remarks invalid, it's sad that some forum users found it necessary to ridicule you and it's good that mods reacted. Good to see Yaga again as well, because he's a perfect example of forum having discussions - people agreed with Yaga, people disagreed with Yaga, devs saw that and made their own decision. Ridiculing takes us nowhere, voice your opinions and let the devs sort it out, we just need to keep it civil so we don't deter them from actually browsing those threads.

Really nice blog! Also regarding the realism in castles my personal opinion is i'd much rather have you focus on it being beautiful rather than 100% realistic. Of course this is within a limit and there's a gap between beeing unrealistic and suspension of disbelief! But a few support pillars less in terms of having better looking things I wouldn't mind at all!

I don't understand all this white knight BS. I think, if for whatever reason, talworlds offered the community fecal sandwiches, they'd defend them, citing that it's either "what taleworlds wants, they're allowed artistic liberties" or "that it's got high quality bread and lettuce in, the feces is such a minor detail"

Fact is: the walls are objectively too thin for a castle's keep, and I can't imagine what kind of fun you think you'll be getting with thinner walls. It's not just "that they wanted to show us a sketch of the inside" because if you compare it to the exterior, you've just got thin walls.

There are castles with more palace-like keeps which had better outer walls. Those "castles" were
A: in ludicrously defensible locations, like atop a mountain and surrounded by more than four layers of walls
and/or
B: In the gunpowder era, where thick walls didn't matter.

If we look at how castles are generally constructed, The Keep is first. The keep is the minimum definition of what a castle is. The keep is the primary fortification, and walls/the gatehouse are secondary/not even necessary. If you have a keep, it's a castle. This is not a keep that alone would be a castle.

If BL is feces, than you can just walk away, you're not forced to be here discussing about feces.

Nitpickers gonna nitpick.

The walls in the actual game won't be thick at all. Think about this. Doors don't open, you teleport through them. There are no transitions between the outside and the inside. Wall thickness isn't a minor detail for you to nitpick. It isn't even a detail to begin with.

Yaga! We missed you too! If you aren't aware, you starred in one of the blogs (Blog 43- Conversational Animations) and many people use the images of your proto-character as a reaction meme.

You gain renown

It's good to have you back

Very interesting.
Empire armour number 3 can be scrapped.
now this is a small feature I would like implemented which would increase immersion substantially.
two or 3 slots on your character for decoration
for example, a drinking horn, jewellery, coin purse, drinking sack, heraldry, spice pouch, scroll of paper(title to your lands), carry bag, armour decorations(helmet adornements)
these items can provide certain skills or simply decorative but armies would appear much more real with diversity expanded.
keep up the great work.

please show some pictures of the subfactions. sons of the forest sound the most intriguing to me

I think visual diversity is an excellent thing, and if there's a modeler around to make it then why not? You don't have to wear it, and it would break up the monotony of your troops.

+1 Empire armour numbers 3 and 4 could be modded into a Roman Legionary for Bannerlord. Just needs the leather parts combined and the gambeson torso substituted for a leather or banded cuirass. The more assets/variations that TW gives us to play with the better. Not all modders are talented enough to model everything from scratch.

I find myself in agreement. No.1 is my favourite, being the most sensible, and by contrast, no.3 is the least. You're going to a war, not a fashion show.

blog_post_41_taleworldswebsite_02.jpg

This makes me want to play Aserai. Everything here looks really good, impressively so, except shoulder armour No.1 (maybe no.2). It looks really restrictive of movement and the model would probably have to bend awkwardly to accommodate that.

blog_post_41_taleworldswebsite_04.jpg

These are really nice, though I do hope for more colour and exciting patterns in the final game, maybe making them a bit more exotic. Try not to mute culture so much, you don't need to dull colours to make the place look cold. I also hope that there'd be a visible wealth divide/occupational cues on people.

I really appreciate that we got a look at three different cultures in this one blog. That's great. I'm really hoping they'll use culture to diversify mercenaries, looters, and other previously "culture neutral" units (you can't really do culture nuetral)

very nice blog, very informative and i like the pictures a lot. the keep building design pic is also very nice. also some variety in armour is very good, i liked it.

i wanted to ask the following
1. will having a low level castle/keep (poorly developed) by a very famous lord have negative impact on his reputation/honour?
2. will having a developed and beautifully decorated castle/keep/settlement will give you extra benefit to your reputation/honour?
3. can you have a low level castle/keep decorated extensively (so you get less security and more reputation/honour in the eyes of your subordinate/fellow lords and vice-versa)?
4.will the level of keep/castle will have any other effect on the owner's status ( i mean effect regarding reputation/honour/standing among lords, not in security/finance)?

and welcome back YAGA

Hey if you're going to die you would at least die fabulous.

Would I be wrong If I say, a thick leather will give a soldier decent protection at least against cuts? If I am right, No.3 would not be just for fashion show.
