A 3D artist or an animator might be constrained by technical limitations or by the particular engine that a game is using, but a concept artist can let their imagination run wild. Combining their research, their artistic sources, and their own skill, they explore new aesthetic possibilities and lead the art of a game to new territories, effectively pushing the boundaries of what a game can offer (in visual terms) to its players. In this week's entry in our blog about Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord and the team behind it, we talk with our concept artist Ali Eser, who created (among other things) the faction banners, many castles, interiors, clothes, and armours. When you look at some impressive-looking armours from Bannerlord: it's very likely that it started with Ali thinking, "hey, this would look cool in the game!".

[/parsehtml]Read more at: http://www.taleworlds.com/en/Games/Bannerlord/Blog/61

Really enjoyed this blog! Love seeing artwork, I hope we can get a book or digital release of it.

Really love the Khuzait architecture/yurts! Im leaning towards Nomadic Farmers mini faction in Sturgia but hope I can take over some yurts

the blog is nice. it's just a shame that tower would become a ruin in the time required to tell the devs it would collapse. that's quite jarring to me and certainly not fun.
The walls are to thin indeed but that could be resolved because there are two sets of walls with stairs in between. that's a legit building approach. Sadly the inner walls do extend to the top which means the flat stone roof would collapse due to a lack of support. This could easily be solved by adding some pillars. The roof seems light so wood might actually suffice though I'm no material scientist. It would at least make the building a lot more believable if there weren't just a balcony.
also the cupola should be a half sphere due to the way the force distributes. a sphere would change the vertical pressure in the center of the roof into pressure at the rim, which ought to be where the inner wall should reach the top sadly this rood is not a full half sphere which means that the pressure is not delivered vertically. but at an angle. the roof would pull itself apart and need to be supported by either flying buttresses or guy-wire.
the other option would be if the roof literally is a plastered tent in which case it might be light enough to withstand the pressure especially because there are bands around the sides.
all and all it's so close yet still so far and thus in the end quite unappealing to anyone with a basic understanding of physics...

Yeah the walls are 3-4 mms. You can clearly see so in the picture. It is not like the art work is supposed to show the interior and design of the keep and not thickness of the walls or anything.

Let them nitpick man, they'll find problems in each and every feature present in this game, no matter how perfect it is.

First the trees, then the mountain chains, going through "historical accuracy" and now this. I wonder what's next!

PS.: I already feel bad for feeding them with this post.

I hope you mean cm. otherwise, since the inner walls are also part of the design and there is no reason to assume they don't intent the outer walls this thin I don't see why it would be an unjust criticism.

well in return we get nice looking tree anyway, but yeah it just a concept design its not the actual building in the game maybe its improved or different in the game.

:meh: it's nice to see blogs like this and everything that go into alot of detail but honestly a real production blog would be nice I know it's the (not telling everyone where it is at) that keeps people watching and waiting but I think saying how far along the actual game is would bring minds to ease this long into production....these are true fans that have waited since the game was first announced years and years ago....

 Guys, please... Do you really have to criticize every single blog they release?

You're always dissatisfied because of thin walls, too high buildings, weird looking hairs etc etc... TW took your opinions to heart and gave us more pics (most of you wanted it) in this interview. Next blog I'm sure, they will show us something more.

Yeah, you can call me naive, but I appreciate everything they show us, because they can do nothing like for example Blizzard (it will be done when it's done™).

So gusy... really...

As for Freelancer, I read somewhere they will take inspiration from Diplomacy, and Freelancer mods, so I'm almost sure, that being a soldier in Lord's party will be in game.

I don't understand all this white knight BS. I think, if for whatever reason, talworlds offered the community fecal sandwiches, they'd defend them, citing that it's either "what taleworlds wants, they're allowed artistic liberties" or "that it's got high quality bread and lettuce in, the feces is such a minor detail"

Fact is: the walls are objectively too thin for a castle's keep, and I can't imagine what kind of fun you think you'll be getting with thinner walls. It's not just "that they wanted to show us a sketch of the inside" because if you compare it to the exterior, you've just got thin walls.

There are castles with more palace-like keeps which had better outer walls. Those "castles" were
A: in ludicrously defensible locations, like atop a mountain and surrounded by more than four layers of walls
and/or
B: In the gunpowder era, where thick walls didn't matter.

If we look at how castles are generally constructed, The Keep is first. The keep is the minimum definition of what a castle is. The keep is the primary fortification, and walls/the gatehouse are secondary/not even necessary. If you have a keep, it's a castle. This is not a keep that alone would be a castle.

You are aware that the walls are made of adobe right ?
I and Ki-Ok Khan translated the small texts in the image but maybe you missed that.

Would the thickness matter for better defence if the walls are made of adobe ?

This keep is obviously meant for the accomodation of the lord and his troops.

because if you compare it to the exterior, you've just got thin walls.

Exterior of the keep, not the whole castle. This keep belongs to a level 3 castle so it is surrounded by level 3 castle walls.

EDIT:
as mentioned before, the ceiling doesn't look well supported,

There is no ceiling, they placed a yurt on top of the walls. There is just a bit of horizontal extention of the wall to place the yurt on.
The extention is made of adobe and the yurt is probably made of felt so it is very light.

Dont think they just skipped drawing the whole ceiling in order to get a better inferior sight. Central Asians wanted to see the sky in their houses because of their religion. It is called Tengri hole. They closed it only when it rained.

Making a keep out of relatively thin walls of adobe is insane, and T3 meaning 3 walls is neither confirmed nor adequate, unless there's a mountain involved and the gatehouses would suffice as keeps anywhere else.

"obviously meant for the acommadation...."
Yeah, no ****. It's a keep, which means it needs to be fortified accomadation not one or the other. What do you think a castle is?
