For many people, Mount & Blade: Warband is a singleplayer experience which lets them rise from the rank of a commoner up to the ruler of an entire kingdom, developing their character and fighting in epic sieges along the way. For others, it is an opportunity to run around naked with a two-handed sword and test their combat skills against players from all around the world. In this week’s blog, we talk with the person responsible for making these equally epic (and sometimes silly) experiences a reality in Bannerlord: Korneel Guns.

All of these superficial stupid morale-like systems are awful for competitive. Competitive should not be for everyone and should not have invisible systems dictating how you play. Also, who in the **** complained about camping? I literally, in all the years I play warband, have not seen 1 man complaining about someone else camping except casuals in siege servers who cry about bowmen. You have '~' to look around which practically makes any player trying to ambush-camp impossible to do. Battle was a great mode and it is still played by everyone in the competitive scene, including the shrunken community of Mercenaries which still manages to get 40-50 people everyday during happy hour and on its siege. The frustration of casual players in battle is because public servers in battle like IG_Battlegrounds can hold up to 50 people which can lead to fast deaths and big waiting times. Matchmaker should have limited sizes in battle mode and I quite honestly dont see 1 reason of it not return. Skirmish sounds bad and this has nothing to do with the ''people cry when they see change'' which is total bull****. Change is good if something needs to be changed, in this case most mean as overhaul, battle DID NOT need an  overhaul. It needed faction balance and a bit more active gameplay. Which can happen through multiple objectives instead of a **** morale system.

As many have eluded to here, and something I want to bring to the discussion: there has been a feeling of disconnect between the competitive Mount and Blade community and the developers of their beloved game. One of two things seem to be at play here. Either TaleWorlds are completely ignorant of the native competitive community, or they have little ambitions to foster and grow it - if this is the case I'd love to know the 'why?'. Is it a case of numbers and potential? (I.e. "not enough people play it therefore we should focus on more lucrative endeavors"). I understand not everybody may get what they want out of Bannerlord, but this is large community who have accumulated knowledge over 8 years that I think should be taken into consideration for the future of multiplayer in this franchise.

Well, the latest blog seems like they are trying to do something for the multiplayer domain, but it falls far short of its potential, and seems to have ignored the foundation that the competitive Warband community has built over the last 8 years. The reason you are seeing so many competitive players coming out of the woodwork with skeptical expressions is because each serious player has an idea of what the multiplayer game could be, and the community's collective dream has taken a swift kick to the scrotum with this latest blog. Not only that, but they (TWs) have done the equivalent of my blind grandma trying to throw a bulls-eye in darts - they seem to have completely missed the mark. My only hope is that the blog is not indicative to what we'll see come release day.

I sincerely hope this new game mode, which now seems to be what TaleWorlds is promoting (in place of battle) lives up to the hype you are trying to create. My advice, and the advice of the majority of the people who have successfully played your game competitively for years, is to keep battle mode. We know its strengths, and we know what needs to be done from a developers stand-point to fix the weaknesses. It would be foolish to release the multiplayer game without officially supporting the battle game mode. Release it (with the fixes that the competitive community have smoothed out over years) beside your new skirmisher game mode and let the community decide what the best game mode is.

I think for the conversation to progress further, we need to be civil. I'd like to hear the input of others from the competitive warband community and why we should try to save battle mode (if even possible). It might be useful to put together a list of strengths to try to convince TaleWorlds a mistake is being made.

I think it would be good if you were to actually comprehensively detail the benefits n drawbacks of battle in contrast to other modes in Bannerlord as well as describe the problems and solutions that you claim are viewpoints completely shared across the competitive scene. I will also note that there ARE users who have expressed (from my interpretation anyways) that nothing should be changed about battle because they enjoy it casually and don't care about the competitive side of things. Now, such users are fans just like the competitive players... should they be disregarded?

Yep, you're just reiterating the end of my post here, and I can help with it when I have some time:

Most of the changes that the competitive scene has made to battle are balance issues, which arguably would benefit everybody, even casual players.

Now as a event host of many years I feel I must put my 10p into the discussion about battle game mode. the battle game mode is the basis for all the clan and regiments events the vast majority of the events occur on Battle where you are given a plane canvas in order to play how you desire using different tactics etc.. Respawning dose have its problems when it comes to trying to play as 1 group and that is you don't all die at the same time so cannot stick together, slowly over the cause of the event you become divided as people run of and follow other lines etc. its one of the reasons I found people preferring battle over siege. people  want to play as a clan in a group in a formation of shields or a archer line. The battle mode is as already said the base of all events and clans keep coming to the same battle game mode for years and has as a result kept the community alive for so long and in the grand scheme of things rather big its just that its harder to see its size due to all the mods events (note not a bad thing).

The removal of buying items and replacing it with pre-sets will be a great disappointment to a lot of eager fans and clans. The items meant you could customize yourself and play how you wanted be it heavy armour and a spear or light and a huge sword. it also added a bit of uniqueness to each person and clan for instance in a event you could be a infantry block next to another infantry block and yet not be the same as you and your men have a big spike on your heads etc. people like to be a little different I even see it in my NW and NaS events where regs actively wait to see what over lines have gone and then choose a regiment that no one else has taken so they can stand out. in NW etc. there are uniforms for regiments which is why you cannot just have a random bunch of things on but with Native there was that leeway with the fact there not a regimental uniform so people could decide this is what my clan would look like and wield in battle and its there uniform.

There is no real reason in my mind for there not to be both battle with no respawns and a open canvas for people to be equipped with what they want and use the formations and tactics they choose so people can put there tactics and skills to the test in one battle, with there also being a skirmish mode though i think maybe implementing the economy system in that would be good as well.

I hope you find my feed back useful when it comes to debating this with one another and if it dose get brought up with the rest of the development team as the previous game worked so well that you could have published warband 2 with better graphics and I am sure it would have been fine with the fans but you are actively seeking out new things to implement which is great however I do hope you don't over look the small things that made the fans stay with the game for so long such as customization and the clan battle events.

i think it even better if multiplayer have weapon customization, such a waste of potential that they not include it.

But that would be a pain to balance. Not to mention people would probably find 'the weapon' and then MP wouldn't be fun anymore.

Yep. If it were possible however to have some sort of aesthetic only customization I'd be all for it.

Love this blog, literally cannot wait until this game comes out. If it comes out this year I'd be ecstatic if its next year i'll still be happy.

All the best guys

It is a silly idea to remove battle game mode completely.

If you want competitive scene to use your game-mode then make matchmaking pick skirmish only. Battle game-mode is not just about competitive.
Yes , there will be mods which add this game mode . However , people should not need to rely on someone to make it.
Once , I played on a server with 250 players(Battle game-mode). It was one of the most fun I have had in Warband.  I was really excited for massive field, village, ruins etc battles with hundreds of players in Bannerlord. There is an enormous difference between wanting huge battles defending castles and field battles. Never would I ever think that it would come across Taleworlds' mind to remove it completely and leave the work to modders.

These game modes are core of the multiplayer scene(not competitive) and you should not expect people to rely on some modder to make it , update it etc etc..
I am not saying you should add every type of multiplayer mode , such as : pw mode , c-rpg etc. Just the basic ones which will be played a lot.

have the skirmish mode as the designated mode in competitive matchmaking.

Let battle be run on the community servers.

Not a hard concept to fathom, I do not understand why I've had to sign up to these ****ty forums after 4k hours in the game to state something so blatantly obvious. If taleworlds wants to ruin bannerlord then by all means remove battle, I just cannot understand why they would even consider such an option.

No mention of same party co-op campaign, why is the extended silence necessary? Wasn't this man the most qualified to answer.

There is nothing to add. They have said multiple times that coop will not be available.

Where? I would appreciate your source/quote. I must have missed that part in all the interviews, showcases and devblogs.

I reserve judgment on Skirimish and battle mode until I get to play the game. Both modes have items I like and items I dislike. (mainly because I am crap at the game)

Looking forward to the next Blog Callum and thank you Korneel for taking your time to write this blog!

oh well if you guys think so, im not mp player though so i dont know much compare to you guys.
but i dont think the weapon customization will be overpower though judging their explanation of the weapon physic in single player, maybe give them price for each part or restrict some part with certain faction, or weapon customization only available for certain mode to limit it, or something.

and seeing they want it to complement player fighting style, its such a waste that it only against AI in single player.

From my experience, nobody just picks the "optimal weapon" all the time in Warband, people do have different tastes, preferences and priorities. The "everyone will just make the perfect weapon and use that" argument falls flat to me because people have very different ideas of what that may be. Yes, bigass Swadian swords are awesome, but (with NeoGK mod), many people opt for the voulge instead, despite the obvious superiority of great swords. Not to mention that people will deliberately use weapons they think are bad, just for fun. I myself totally want to run around naked with a comically short two-handed sword.

I think the obvious answer to all this is to make players design weapons for each faction individually, all with a different palette of available parts. Just as with the stats, the price of your custom weapons would be dynamically generated.
There's no gameplay-related excuse for not including this IMO. The only valid explanation is that it would have a negative effect on performance.
If you really think there's a balance problem just make it a server-side option and ban it in competitive play.

Three questions

1)Will there be DM or TDM modes I failed to see them ?
2)Ok, so we know that there wont be a battle mode but will there be any other mode that will have perma death ? I would love to see a siege mode with perma death just to keep things more immersive.
3)Why the **** did you remove the battle mode ? Sorry but non of your answers are convenient, not even close ! Dost acı söyler.

Also a suggestion: It would be cool if you allowed servers to make more than 2 factions available in deathmatch mode.(If the answer is yes for the 1st question ofc.)

hi,

a couple of questions.

- about the commander mode (now "battle" mode, right?): do we have there a "morale" system? meaning, do the bots of a certain unit panick and flee if outnumbered / flanked / attacked from behind / exhausted / decimated / commander dead? (and differently if elite, vets, recruits, Farmers, and so on)
here a good morale system is a must, both in SP and in MP, otherwise there is no point in tactics on the battlefield.

- can you play as a hero, inside a division or independent? player characthers are not influenced by morale effects, I would assume.

- how do you choose the commander in MP? is there a votation system before the battle?

- one thing which should be a must is the option to completely remove the bots: it should then come down to the warband battle system, plus eventually the divisional and the absolute commander... is it available? so it would also mean: no bots, no respawn (aka permanent death). Make lots of people happy, methinks.
@ community: if yes... then is like the old one.. or am I missing something?

I am looking forward to this mode, a totalwar-game like feeling with much, much more Immersion and the Chance to actually break some heads by your own  ... and hopefully still a way to play it "the old way"

I don't remember the gamemode name but in Viking Conquest there was one where players would fight against waves of AI.
Never forget at release we were like 150 people doing a shieldwall! Damm that was epic

@Callum

Would it in theory be posible for a very ambitious mod to create sort of a mini 1-scene multiplayer campaign ?
