| History: The regiment was raised on February 4 1644 by cardinal Mazarin under the name of Mazarin-Français from the remnants of units decimated at Rothweil. It was initially a gentleman regiment. In 1658, it took the name of the province of Bretagne. The regiment counted two battalions. During the War of the Polish Succession, the regiment served in Germany from 1733 to 1735. During the War of the Austrian Succession, the regiment initially served in Bavaria in 1742 and 1743. In 1744. it served on the Moselle, then in Flanders 1745 and 1746. In 1747, the regiment was transferred to Provence where it took part to the conquest of Nice. During the Seven Years' War, the regiment ranked 29th and was under the command of: November 1 1746: chevalier de Clermont March 31 1759 to February 3 1770: vicomte de Baune
