The Winds of the North Mk. III
Cold winds of change blow across the Norse land. It is 864A.D. by the weak Christian standards, and men from across Scandinavia are dropping their plows in favor of their father’s swords. Dragons, trolls, and stranger things are awakening from the icy sleep in the mountains, and the gods are uneasy. And now, they say a great raid is coming against the weaklings in Angle-land, and the great kings of the North are preparing to go a Viking. But many in the wild lands of the north are slow to waken to these changes. And now the wisest Bards are preaching a great prophecy; one of a epic quest on the scale that hasn’t been seen since the mythic age.

And nestled among the great mountains, in the green valleys of their father’s fathers, the small village of Jorundal is about to be awakened. Change, no matter how resisted by the village elders, is coming. The prophecy calls, and a band of young men, barely older than boys, must answer. Amongst the swirling white snow of the high mountains above their modest home, unknown to all but the Fates, they are about to hear their call. It is summer, and war is coming.

Setting
This Roleplay is set at the height of the Viking era, a year before the great invasion of England by the Three Brothers. This one will be a fair bit different from my other RP, Surge of Iron, in that it will be run on a far freer quest story set-up, than the quite restricting Historical Fiction genre. The Winds of the North is a sort of Historical Fantasy, with historical settings supplemented by mythological influences, references, and characters, particularly in the mountains of the North. And while I won’t have elves and trolls frolicking about on every corner, and dragons and dwarves in every cave, they will still have an important part in the story. Early on, action will be a bit restricted, with the characters focusing more on character development and plot than say, a kill count.

Also, another important aspect of this role-play is it has an actual plot, also unlike SoI. So while this might cramp your freedom of writing a bit, it will make the RP a lot more structured, and a lot less garbled, while producing a quite pleasing story accentuated by each player’s uniqueness.

Character Creation

Character creation will also be a fair bit more restricted as well, for the sake of the story. So sorry, no full out veterans for this RP. All players are required to be around 16 to 19, with little experience of war, battle, etc. This encourages greater character development, while reducing Ramboesque ‘take twenty arrows to the face and live’-ness. Origins are also restricted, with all the characters hailing from the small village of Jorundal, set in the midst of the mountains of Norway. As in SoI, I will determine the character’s equipment (which will likely be modest). However, besides that, participants are free to create their own characters, from family details, appearance, occupation, personality, etc.

The Application process will be much like the Surge of Iron, with first a submission with character details, and proof of role playing abilities to be reviewed by the peers before being accepted into the roleplay. Another requirement to be added is to include your time zone for future reference.

Character Basic Application:
Name: First and Last name
Basic Physical Appearance: (Hair color, eye color, weight, height, complexion)
Advanced Physical Appearance*: (Tattoos, scars, face details, etc.)
Occupation: (Most likely a Sheppard, blacksmith’s apprentice, farmer, etc.)
Family Details: (Father, Father’s occupation, Mother, wealth (try to keep it modest), social status)
Age: (Anywhere around 15 to 19)
Additional Background*: (Anything else you would like to add, like personal background, among other things)

*optional

(All above is the work of Tiberius Decimus Maximus , original starter of the role play)

My Character sheet.

Name: Bogurmathur Hjorrmandson
Basic Physical appearance: slim but has sufficient muscle mass, grayish blue eyes, long brown hair by only traces of a beard. Weights about 60 kgs, and about 1.82 meters tall.
Advanced PA: Has a birthmark in the shape of a wolf on the side of his neck, and a slightly weathered and hardened look from lifestyle. (see additional background)
Occupation: Chief's son, trains regularly but hunts and spends much free time in the wild.
Family Details: Father: Lighether, a retired warrior chief, married to Yeniskia, fifth daughter of a thane . He has one older sister and four brothers, being the second child and first born son of a fertile family. It is said that his great-grandfather was a berserkr named after his sword.
Age: almost 17
Additional Background: Son of the chief, Bogurmathur spent most of childhood learning how to wield his father's sword, fight in a shield wall, and work with weapons in general. Most of his youth was spent training for a life of leadership and battle, resulting in him having more fighting and weapon prowess then any other boy his age. An early fascination with the woods and wolves, however, garnered Bogurmathur some lessons from his father in hunting and tracking, with his first doe at the age of 11 making him an avid hunter. Bogurmathur spent his free time hunting, tracking and learning the ways of the woods, with the occasional deer, rabbit or other game providing the excuse for his pastimes. By 14 he was stalking deep in the forest on his own, with little but a bow and knife for comfort. Dispite spending more time in the woods then under his fathers's roof, he always returns two days in every week to train at arms, although his father often disapproves on how long he spends in the woods, hunting and chasing deer. However, underneath his disapproval, his father understands that the skill Bogurmathur learns on his own are as good as the ones that he could teach Bogurmathur, skills that one can only learn by experience and not by teaching. Aside from time spent hunting, he regularly attends social functions and visits outlining farms... everyone knows him, although nobody knows him too well...

Name:  Úlfr Þórbrandr

Basic Physical Appearance: Dark brown hair reaching down to his neck with facial stubble, Blue eyes, 186 lb. , 6'3".

Advanced Physical Appearance:  Claw scars across face, torso, and arms.  A wolfs talon with fangs on either side hangs around his neck.

Occupation:  Scout

Family Details:  Deceased;  Killed during the wolf attack 7 years ago.

Age: 17.

Additional Background:  His family was attacked by a pack of wolves when he was 10 years old.  No one really knows more about his past.  (more will be revealed in the RP)  He lives with his uncle Agnar Þórbrandr who is 31, and helps his uncle occasionally in dealing leather.

Equipment:  He inherit a one-handed iron battle axe from his father who recieved it during a raid, which he never parts with.  (i.e. in its sheathe on his waist always)  It was also the axe that he picked up from his father, used to kill the wolves that attacked his family.

Name: Alfgrímr Karlsefnisson

Basic Physical appearance: Tall, young, thin, and fair. Perhaps he could be described as a young tree.

Advanced PA: 6 feet 2 inches in height, 154 pounds/11 stone. He has slight growth of chin-hair, while his head hair is a reddish brown, medium length, parted on the right, and straight. He is pale of skin, but marked with moles on his body and limbs, and a few 'teenager spots' on his face. His face is moderately handsome, a little long, with a slightly upturned nose, greenish-blue eyes, a sharp chin that is slightly forward, and a jaw that is not wide. His arms and legs are long, and adequately muscled. He has feet that would fit modern size 13 shoes. He has no scars or wounds to speak of besides minor day-to-day bumps & cuts.

Occupation: Farmer

Family Details: The Karlsefni family settled in Norway not long ago, and Alf's father was said to be an adventurer before he found his wife, and ended his fighting career on a modest farm. Alfgrímr's mother was the daughter of a shepherd who fell madly in love with this stapping man who told tales of battle and glory. Alfgrímr has two younger sisters, his mother, his father, and an older brother who died as an infant of disease.

Age: 16

Additional Background: Jorundal is a small and secluded village, which means a small and secluded life experience for Alfgrímr. He has lived all his life wondering what sorts of things happen far away from his little agrarian hamlet. His mother scorned this pointless interest in foreign lands. Even so, his father began training him from a young age how to properly use the spear and shield which, he had an inkling, would eventually be of some use. It made Alfgrímr relatively fit and strong in any case, which helps with the farm he would one day inherit. He likes books & scrolls, whenever he can read them anyways, as they are only posessed by the very wealthy, and his reading skills are not excellent. He is also very good at hiding himself.

Items and objects: Loose red linen breeches & hose, and leather shoes. A red linen tunic, a leather vest, a grey wool cloak, and goatskin mittens. He has been given on occasion the allowance to use his father's old shield, which is round, 36 inches in diameter, and painted black & red. He has been trained with a plain oak staff of six feet for a long time, but it could easily be given any head, as he had been trained to use it as though it had one.

sigh. ok lets start tearing down these characters.

Jesse, you're character, age of 17 and with no prior combat experience, which is required of you're character, is somehow the tactical adviser of our experienced warrior chief, despite the fact he keeps two huscarls in his retainer-ship (they also farm, but whatever). please read the below quote again.

That said, you are at liberty to keep you're axe, although such an old weapon would be worn by the ages of time. Moreover, given the lack of steel in northern Europe at the time, as the methodology for making it existed but was in the south, it seems very unlikely such a weapon would be made from steel.

You should probably get yourself into a larger family structure in order to insure you're survival. an adoptive family, so to speak.

RalliX, you're good. we can never have too many farmers.

Yeah I don't know much of the viking timeline relative to when steel was discovered, let alone tempered steel.  Seeing as farmers were the most respected in the viking community I didn't feel like going that route so I didn't put much thought into the career.

Fixed however.

Name: Herin (Never seen that before, savvy?) Grimsalfar

Basic Description: Short, thin, long thick arms and upper body.

Advanced Description: 5'9, slightly enlarging belly. Fatty thighs, strong calfs. Hardy hands, and brown hair. His hair is long in size, and slightly curly. Very light hazel eyes, complementing his big cheekbones. he has a average-sized nose, and a small mouth.

Occupation: Blacksmith

Family Details: Herin's Father had been the small village's smithy for 11 years, and was seeking to pass on his job to his oldest son Herin, who had been his apprentice sine the age of 10. Herin has two brothers, and a sister. The Grimsalfar clan has survived many hardships which has brought them to the village of Jorundal, in which they hope to stay.

Age: 19

Additional Background: As a young teenager, 13-14 he used to hunt with a few friends from the village sometimes twice a week, which gave him basic knowledge of the bow, however he would not use one in combat. His real skills, lied in sword-and-shield combat. Being around swords most of his life he learned respect for all weapons, and enemies. Although his skills may seem great, they are nothing compared to those of the warrior class.

Items and other things: Leather gloves, which are worn out and dirty. A Blacksmith's apron, tan in color. A darkened white shirt, which is his only under-garment, and a wool coat, which he wears when he is away from the smity.

I donno, another farmer cannon fodder that might become a great hero.

Draco, this is a small village, so i doubt you'd get much swords hanging around and stuff. Sure, the occasional blade for you're father to work on, but it won't be like you'd be making sword or having lay around on a regular basis. As the blacksmith, you'd be working on farm tools and that like most of the time.

Ok then, I wasnt expecting 20 of them anyway, but enough to brush off the occasional wolf attack or raid

These scythes must be made!
