What does "troops in the formation you are leading" mean?

The code is there as well. If you're asking me to state 100% the code isn't bugged, I can't. Testing to see if the perks are being applied goes over my head.
The 1.5.0 patch notes.
Added automatic captain assignment to formations without a captain.
  • To use this feature, assign a formation to a companion from the party screen.
  • Once a battle starts the first companion/hero that is assigned to a formation is picked as the captain of the formation (this also works for AI parties).
  • Captains provide formation-wide perk bonuses to their troops.
  • If a captain dies or flees, the next living companion/hero (if there are any) within the same formation is picked as the new captain.
And @mylittletantan confirmed it in this
thread, right here:
I debugged and set breakpoints in GetPerkEffectsOnAgent ( SandboxAgentStatCalculateModel SandBox.dll ) which tries to find the captain for the agents formation and if found applies captain perk effects. I got a companion and assigned it to a formation and it was then correctly the captain for this formation. I did not try assigning multiple companions to a formation but the captain selection code ( MissionDefaultCaptainAssignmentLogic TaleWorlds.MountAndBlade.dll) looks solid and is used so I do not doubt that it works.

I also checked the player agent in a non army battle and it's formation is null since the player does not have a default nor got to choose a formation, which means it is never considered for captain by any formation in those battles.

Pre 1.5.0 the only time a formation captain was set was when the player got to choose at the start of battle.

what if I have no companions? if I play solo, will the captain's skills apply to me? after all, if there are no companions, then the "commander-captain" of all troops is the MC
Or is the presence of companions a prerequisite for the captain's skills to work?

No, you will only apply your captain perks if you are part of an AI army and you are assigned a formation in a battle.

Party leader are the perks that will be applied in this case

From my understanding (I could be mistaken) that is when the player character's leader perks are applied.
@Apocal was this a typo? My understanding is that in this situation the captain perks will apply.

So the player's formation perks are useless if you are in a solo party? This really changes how usefull it is to actually grind combat perks instead of leaving them to your companions.

Most games are centered around the player making his/her enjoyment better and companions are fluff or icing on the cake. But in BL I can't lead a formation in my own army. I can't be governor of my own town. It's just such a strange concept and like you said many players feel like so many perks are useless. I keep coming back to the idea that whoever is making these kinds of decisions really doesn't understand what playing video games is about or fundamentally doesn't understand what many gamers want.

Everyday, all year someone, somewhere has a dilemma "Do I take this perk for +1 dingle hoppers this one with +5 captain whoopty do's on Tuesday" and after looking for the answer they make the disappointing discovery that there will be no captain whoopty doos to be had for them. Sometimes they have spent multiple games ruminating and contemplating all those whoopty do's, only now to find it was never needed, they often never were even leading a party in someone else army but once or twice a game maybe.

There's often a stage of denial and reactive downvotes to this information. "How could that be? "It must be a troll!" "How could TW make so many useless perks?" "Why can't I just choose 1 group to ally my own perks to in my own party?" "It's just a few whoopty do's anyways?"

Tw, come on, give us our whoopty do's!

There are too many areas and zero concentrations. It makes no sense to have Governor perks in a tree for the player. Governor perks should be an addition to the personal bonus, not the only perk. OMG, THREE BONUSES ON A PERK U HACKER
