Starting as a Lord

I find starting as a lord is pretty hard, but maybe its just me.  You can't go to any other lords or the king to get missions.  And once your called up by the Marshall to help fight in a battle, your troops have little experience and I usually have bad equipment with my character.  You can still do things for guildmasters and elders but those quests don't paynearly as much.  Is there anything else I could do to earn more money?

Well if you got a few levels on you betting on yourself in tournaments is always a good thing, if you bet 500 denars for each fight you'll get 19900 denars if you win the whole thing.  Oh and its good for you renown

This is true, but again, my character is weak at the begenning and winning in tournaments isn't so easy.

escort a few caravans to a long distant location (i.e. Bristol to Jerusalem) will give you a generous amount of money and xp to lift you up to 3 levels at once (if you are a low level). Once completed that make your way back to your kingdom by findin another caravan to escort at or near your kingdom. A few trips like this and you'll leave soldiering to become a caravan escort

oh and btw.. dont accept missions from villages unless you want to improve relations or gain some honor... the time and the reward is not worth it....

P.S. Once you got around 30-40K head off to the Golden Horde/Russian region and buy land at some towns worth profit of 1000+ denar a week (not all towns there provide this)

Starting as a lord is easy, crank up intelligence, trainer and leadership skills at start. All you have to do is wait for the first fief income which will not be low. With the money recruit as many villagers as you can and wait a bit so you have some upgraded ones. Rob a random village for cattle but first make sure it has cattle by talking to the elder. Go asking around villages who needs cattle upping the reputation with them, making it possible to raise more troops from those villages. When they are bandit infested, upon defeating the bandits there is a strong chance that the vilagers will need cattle. Ideally, the villages would be of your troop type. As your soldiers gain training you can start doing the tougher quests and if at war attacking the enemy caravans and patrols.

So it combines with the merchant scenario as you can drag both the caravan and the cattle, gaining money for gear and xp very fast until you're ready for the tournaments. Win a few and you can start buying enterprises to support troop wages.

Actually, if you have a hunting crossbow and a horse then you are more or less invincible in any tournament (even at lv1). Just make sure you are not aiming at your own team before pulling the trigger.

Or, you could do what I do.  Start a new game, instantly go to the character screen, export character, then close, go to the Characters folder, tweak your new import file to give yourself a few basic skills/attributes (like +10 attributes and 3 pts leadership/persuasion/fighting skills) set XP to 0 and Money to 50,000.

You can then import that and start the game with a Level 1 character with level 3 abilities and enough cash to get some basic equipment.

Personally, I don't really think it's cheating, since I've had to restart so many times from all the new (and awesome) patches.

Use wars to loot as many villiges as possible, selling loot gives a lot of  cash, then use that cash to invest in production in cities(as many as you can).

I prefer the "fifth weel " approach, I tag along powerful lords into battle, order my troops to stay back and just execute attacks of opportunity, leaving the allies to bear the brunt  of battle, you and your troops get XP, you get reputation with the lord and renown, later you might "accidentally" mislead your lord into an ambush and  shoot your allies to tip the balance in the enemy's favor, when his fief falls to the enemy you ride to the rescue retake the town and justly claim it as your own

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW HOW DID YOU EVEN THINK ABOUT THAT???? waaaaaaaaaaaa I would sooo be shot in the back if i was a lord...hahaha
I am trully impressed (lol) about your tactical approach and "the end justify the means" I salute your skills hehe

Personnally, I started a game as a lord of Novgorod, and this is totally impossible... You start at war with Sweden and Teutonics, and get litterally raped. Even if you fight with Alexander Nevsky. The novgorod lords just wander somewhere else instead of joining you in fights (or even joining Nevsky, their ruler). Or, they fight alone and get demolished by 800 enemy troops... So you just loose a castle, then another one, than a city, another city, and thats it, all novgorod's possessions are gone.....
:S
anyone has played as novgorod lord? I think there should be some (rather easy) way to make peace, or to start at peace....

Peace? Forget about it!! I have forgotten how it was to enjoy a feast in the English realm. Ever since the war with France kicked off I had about 3 feast invitations which I couldnt manage to reach in time before the Marshall decided to 'Ride to the defence of Rouen'. There can be no peace between hated factions such as England and France, Mamluks and Crusaders, Latin and Byzantians ect... sweet war
