Range troops

Is there a way to modify/alter:

a) Distance at which Ranged troops begin to "fire" their weapons

b) Distance at which Ranged troops switch to melee weapons to receive close-quarters fighting

I'm wondering because I'm noticing that in some mods, there seems to be a difference at which ranged troops (esp. archers) begin to fire and when they switch to melee weapons to confront/defend. For example, in 1257 AD, archers will switch to melee weapons when the enemy is 30-40 paces away (which is significant as this is the killing zone), while archers in "Knights of the Last Battle" will continue to fire until the enemy is about 10-5 paces, drawing melee weapons at the last moment.
 
Range at which ranged weapons start firing is determined by the shoot_speed parameter for the item entry.
Range at which troops switch to melee is usually determined when the unit runs out of ammo. While there are triggers to force switching to/from melee, those mods may or may not have them implemented. Feel free to write your own.
