Large scenes

I've had a problem with very large maps for quite a while. Whenever I have taken the code from the terrain generator and used to it replace the code of an existing scene, there is a problem where the area of the original scene is a different colour to that of the new area. Terrain and heigh alterations aren't remembered in the new area, only the old area, so it's as if the game is rejecting the new areas of the scene. I don't know how many people understand that, but imagine the new scene is 4x the area of the old scene. The quarter that covers the original scene works normally, while the other three quarters are unworkable.

The reason I bring this up is because none of the settlement scenes are as large as battle scenes (it takes about 45 seconds for a courser to ride across the larger settlement scenes, and about 60 to ride across the largest map created by the terrain generator). I'm sure someone has implemented huge maps.
