Over time, they subjugated their neighbours, forcing them into a confederation of city-states. Perhaps they were slightly fiercer than the others, or just lucky, or perhaps it was the one tradition that set them apart - the Calradoi had no kings. Ever since the hero Echerion slew the tyrant Cypegos, the institution of the monarchy was banned, in theory at least. There was an assembly of free citizens that met occasionally, a senate of elders (in practice the largest landowners) that sat permanently, and - when it was absolutely necessary - supreme command could be invested for a short time in the person of an emperor, a title that back then meant little more than the right to lead an army.

[/parsehtml]Read more at: http://www.taleworlds.com/en/Games/Bannerlord/Blog/45

I think the cataphracts probably defeat the rest of the cavalries in the frontal crash. Because they have much longer spears https://youtu.be/c_3el4IAevg?t=5m32s

So Garios is the one who has to pay for the Empires sins against Battania!

Really like the end of the Empire feel to the lore and stuff, even though I'm looking forward to fighting Catraphracts almost as little as I'm looking forward to Vlandian knights. Oh well, just need to hope the AI is smart enough to keep up with light javelin-armed cavalry tractics. They'll be a lot less scary once their fancy horses are dead.

Battanians have heavy cavalry as well.

But Byzantine rulers like Justinian and Alexios Comnenos who brought the empire back from the brink are equally fascinating personalities, as are the ruling empresses like Zoe and Irene.

So you based your female characters on men? Why?

What I dont get is that if the length of the lance really determined the result then why didnt every nation just went for the longest ?

If this lore is meant to be giving some insights about political features of the game, then it is gonna be awesome.

Good blog, thanks Callum.
At game I do not think there is political features
If you have not done any research about it please refrain from giving your opinion and do some research first. There is politics in the game.
Your comment just annoys me because I see these a lot from new people. It should not be too hard to research before forming an opinion .
There is also no reason to think that there wont be any political features since it was lacked alot in Warband and was realised by the developers.
After all, Bannerlord is much bigger , deeper and better version of Warband.

What you are doing helps create a cloud of miss information that gets bigger every time someone says it to a friend of theirs. It gets carried around until people start thinking that it is a fact. I know this is not your intention , so that is why I am trying to explain it to you. Do not get me wrong.

Do they? The only cavalry screenshots in the Battanian blog are light cavalry, specifically these lads:

Who look awesome but definitely aren't as tooled up as the Vlandians or the Catraphracts. If this is from MP then I'm tempted to suggest play balancing might be different to the SP campaigns cultures.

I am loyal to Arenicos, last true emperor of the Calradiac Empire. I will defeat the other three claimants and unite the empire under his vision once more, becoming the successor in death that he was unable to chose in life!

Good blog:smile:

Callum said, on the Steam forums, that it's going to be a surprise subject, not the empire blog.
lol
Good blog anyways

Where do people get this stuff from? I am always reading that I said X or Y, but then when I ask them to find the source they are misinformed.

Maybe I said that two weeks ago but I certainly didn't say it last week in regards to this week's blog.

That was 3 days ago, sir, with all due respect. Though you definitely didn't say it wasn't going to be the empire blog.

The Empire is the last faction - or rather, the last three factions - to be looked at in our series. It is based on the classical tradition of Greece and Rome and their medieval successor, the Byzantines.
Does that mean one will be roman, one will be greek, and one will be byzantine? Or are they all the same mishmash of all three? Personally I'm hoping for roman warrior, greek senate, byzantine empress.

Sweet Blog!
I've been listening to "The History of Rome" podcast recently, so kind of fun to see where you guys draw the parallels.
Don't listen to the whiners, they must not have been here in the dark days, when it was 9 months between any communication whatsoever.

Anyway, keep up the good work.

Fair enough, point taken. Although that's still multiplayer so everyone will have to have some analogue to everyone else I imagine. Also, both of them look quite different from the SP stills.

Anyway, if they do then that's good for big battles but I'll still do the light cav thing because I've sold myself on the idea now and I think it fits the lore they've done better

Great to see the Empire take the field!

I really like that there are three different political sides in the Empire and that we'll get to pick between them. I'm torn between Garios and Rhagaea but I must say that I lean towards the empress because historical knowledge of how the Roman Imperial legions operated when they could extort the emperor for essentially protection money means that the choice of an empress might be better. If Garios had been less about the army and more about a man for the people, like Perikles, I would probably have picked him but right now I'm more in favor of Empress Rhagaea.

Architecture and some animations look great. And unlike the past videos the graphics look alot better. Maybe because of the lightning. Perhaps you changed something about it?

There is a different kind of filter on the city screenshot. is it just me or did you play with the picture afterwards. What exactly is going on ? Is it because of the seasons? Will there be different kinds of lightning for each season? Why am I asking all these questions?
Hi all, I'm one of the engine programmers.

We did have "SSDO" (Screen Space Directional Occlusion) before but we weren't happy with quality/performance ratio so we have implemented a better method but it is not merged in to development environment yet, so screenshot has no AO.
This is a quote from back in early September. I believe that the high quality of the screenshots is due to to the updated occlusion system being fully implemented and finished.

On the topic of the empire, will there be an option to merge the leaders of the other empire factions lords with your own? I don’t mean one lord at a time by convincing them to defeat, but en mass after a factions defeat. Even if you have to defeat them, give the option to add them to the faction of the empire you’re supporting and truely reunite the empire instead of us being forced to kill and/or exile them. There might be relation loss for giving clemency to these defeated lords but having the option could be unique in the empire civil war. If the other kingdoms don’t act fast enough then they have to deal with a reunited empire.

Are people seriously worried about graphics? On a Mount & Blade game?

Seriously.... Graphics have always been the least impressive aspect of M&B, and quite deliberately so, since having hundreds of characters on screen would make the game unplayable if they were on the same level of visual quality as "good looking" games. Hell, I would gladly buy Bannerlord with the exact same graphics as Warband (okay, maybe I would install PL on top of it), if it meant getting all the new gameplay features sooner.

Mount and Blade is not about crysis graphics but what they show now is too outdated and lacks many modern components that could polish it like ambient occlusion, antiallising, tesselation etc

Hi all, I'm one of the engine programmers.

We did have "SSDO" (Screen Space Directional Occlusion) before but we weren't happy with quality/performance ratio so we have implemented a better method but it is not merged in to development environment yet, so screenshot has no AO. Also game will provide you a lots of anti-aliasing options like FXAA, SMAA variants and TAA variants. If you have a beefy machine you can also increase render resolution to %200 for example. Engine also supports "Tessellation" and/or "Parallax Occlusion Mapping" for details.

Also all screenshots are work in progress, we are constantly working on improving graphical quality and performance.

Edit: Also I should mention that we are open to criticism, even though we don't answer all the things here, we are reading on your comments and taking notes.
