It's probably because tobacco products have hugenormous amounts of taxes on them, and people switching to e-cigs robs the country of that income. If you fools want to save your economies from crumbling, you should all become chain smokers.

I assume you're being facetious, but if you aren't, it's a part of the language and is used in everyday speech. It does not necessarily have anything to do with religion.
