| Battle of Vienna AD 1683 In 1673 on the fields near Chocim Hetman Jan Sobieski stopped Turkish invasion on Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Ottomans had to find a different way to conquer Christian Europe - Austria became a new target. In 1682 Hungarians started an anti-Habsburg uprising, as a result Turkish army reached Vienna on 14th June 1683 without any significant resistance. 300 thousand fanatic warriors commanded by Kara Mustafa began the siege of Austrian capital, defended by 18 thousand soldiers under Ernst Starhemberg. After 2 months of heroic defense, Turks breached the walls starting bloody streetfights, finally the help has come - army of Poland and German States, including Bavaria, Swabia, Franconia and Saxony, led by Polish King, Jan III Sobieski, crowned after Chocim victory and called by the Turks "The Lion of Lechistan". The battle took place on 12th September, the decisive charge of Polish and German cavalry was personally led by the King. "The same enemy which we defeated under Chocim, now stands in front of us. Although we are in foreign land, we do not fight for foreign interest. We fight for our own country and for Christianity, not for an Emperor, but for the God" ~Joannes III Sobieski to his soldiers before the battle. |
Organisation
Due to a huge growth in numbers of our community, we've decided to host the Vienna historical event 2 times, so that everyone will be able to participate -
first on Saturday 5.03 and second on Sunday 13.03
If you want, you may signup for both event dates, to play in the opposite team, but you must point which one is the priority for you (to make place for those who cannot attend on different day)
The event will probably last about 1,5h and there is no possibility of leaving in the middle of the battle, so be sure you resign that day from other things like NW linebattles!
Both the event maps have been reworked and they are now not that heavy for the server. We even have completely new, really small and light (and ugly) emergency maps, but I hope they won't be needed. Technical problems seem to be over.
Three phases of event
Heathens' assault 1)Siege Vienna, the capital of Austria was besieged by the Turks. The Polish-German relief is already marching to help their Christian brothers, but the Ottomans are trying to conquer the city before new enemy comes. Time for this round will be 20 minutes. Both sides can make use of all the Deluge features, cannons, grenades, deployable trenches etc. Each regiment signing up for infantry with 8+ players in this round may take 1 engineer (except declared artillery regiments) HRE Austrian musketeer/pikemen - 97/90 (3pp 25, Stratioti 20, Pereyaslav 30, Pappenheimer 15, Hitmen 7) Engineer - 0/10 Ottoman Empire Ottoman infantry - 95/90 (Hakkapeliter 20, ChL 15, 13th 15, 1st Evil 20, Tercio 15, Donkosaken 10) Engineer - 0/10 |
Help is coming! 2)Engagement Suddenly, like a bolt of lightning, missles from Polish cannons located on the Kahlenberg hill flew over the Turkish camp. The Ottomans were completely unaware of the possibility to be attacked from this side and they don't have any trenches there. They only barriers that do not allow Christian troops to charge straightly the Turkish camp are small villages and vineyards guarded by some janissaries. German and Polish infantry, supported by cannons from the top of the hill, must capture these points to clear the way for main assault. Meanwhile, the Tatar horde is flanking the Christian troops and probably will have to face Polish cavalry. This phase will be played as battle. The winner of cavalry combat will be able to help infantry in fight for strategic points. Commonwealth & HRE Hussars - 15/15 (Pereyaslav 15) Cossacks style cavalry - 25/20 (3pp 25) Polish Engineers - 0/10 () Polish Hajduks - 15/15 (Pereyaslav 15) German Musketeers/Pikemen - 42/40 (Stratioti 20, Pappenheimer 15, Hitmen 7) Ottoman Empire & Tatars Rich Tatar Warrior - 20/15 (Hakkapeliter 20) Common Tatar - 20/20 (1st Evil 20) Janissary - 40/40 (ChL 15, 13th 15, Donkosaken 10) Tufekci - 22/20 (Tercio 15, Hitmen 7) Engineer - 0/10 |
Winged death 3)Slaughter The fights and preperations have been going on for whole day. Real, main phase of battle has not event started, but in this moment, its result became obvious for all those who ever heard about Polish cavalry and may imagine what happens when a massive charge of 20 000 horsemen reaches unfortified military camp full of frightened infantry. This will be played as siege, Turkish flag will be placed in the centre of their camp and defenders will have 5 lives. Historically all was over after 30 minutes, so it is the maximum time for this round. Commonwealth & HRE Hussars - 25/30 (3pp 25, ) Cossack style cavalry - 30/25 (Pereyaslav 30) German Cuirassiers - 35/25 (Stratioti 20, Pappenheimer 15) Polish dragoons - 7/20 (Hitmen 7) Ottoman Empire Silahdar - 10/10 (Hakkapeliter 10) Guard Sipahi - 10/10 (Hakkapeliter 10) Sipahi - 15/10 (ChL 15) Janissary - 60/70 (13th 15, Tercio 15, 1st Evil 20, Donkosaken 10) |
