Now that I think about it, vanilla EB was quite challenging as well, at least to a point, but I hated things such as Carthage being unable to ever invade just because the sea between it and Rome was making it impossible.

If you play EB with the Alexander expansion they can do naval assaults. I've found it to be a much more difficult and rewarding experience (but then again, I almost exclusively play as Pontos, which is probably the hardest faction in the game).

I did, yeah, but it still never happened.

It's like Bethesda games in strategy form.
