The capital was all that was left from the mighty Christian Roman Empire and its presence, in the midst of the dominions of the powerful new rulers of the lands of Roman Empire, was pregnant with danger. In the 1,123 years of the existence of the Byzantine Empire, Constantinople had been besieged many times but had been captured only once, during the Fourth Crusade in 1204. When, at the age of twenty-one, Mehmed II sat on the throne of the Ottoman Sultans his first thoughts turned to Constantinople. To give the final blow on the half-dead body of the Byzantine Empire he had to move fast. Sultan Mehmed gathered an army force of 80,000 men and besieged the city which held for 53 days. On the 29th of May, after days of bombardment, one final order was given to attack the walls...

This mod will take you 558 years back to the time of the great siege. Choose your side as either a pawn of the Grand Turco, or as a last defender of the once almighty Eastern Roman Empire and decide the fate of the Byzantine Capital.

Is that historically right, that Varangian Guard is wearing scale armor?

Artizan said:
probably not. and probably there werent any varangian guards during the time of the last siege.

Only equipment doesn't fit, varangians have fought during the last siege

Code:
The last picked troops who defended Constantinople against
the Ottoman Turkish onslaught in 1453 were recruited from
the Varangopouloi, the last mixed-blood descendants of the
Varangians, who probably formed the final manifestation
of the Varangian Guard. The man is equipped with the
armour found at the castle of Halkis: a corselet of large
plates over hardened leather and ringmail, with plate arm
and leg defences of Milanese origin. His weapon is a German two-handed sword

Code:
The last mention of Englishmen armed with axes in Byzantine
service is from the year 1404. This guardsman is equipped as
a typical man-at-arms of that period, but his armour is copied
from a fragmentary coat-of-plates of the second half of the
14th century, of Italian or Constantinopolitan origin,
discovered in Azov. His axe is from a specimen in the
museum at Kazanlik, which corresponds to axes represented
in Serbian and Greek church paintings. The interesting blazon
on his ‘heater’ shield is copied from a Cretan fresco of the
early 15th century.

Code:
This emperor’s travels in Western Europe searching for help
against the encroaching Turks inspired representations of
him, his guards and retinue. The miniatures in the manuscript
Les très riches Heures du Duc de Berry are a faithful
reproduction of the emperor’s cavalry clothing, of Turco-
Persian inspiration. His high skiadion is lined with silk and fur;
the main garment is an Italian tamparion, decorated with
Chinese silk and Kufic inscriptions, Note his highly chiselled
and inlaid sabre, copied from a specimen in Belgrade.

Code:
The warrior is copied from an icon of the Cretan school, in the
church of Megali Panaghia, Patmos; details are supplied by
two other icons showing similar armour. Note the cuir-bouilli
upper arm defences and decorated leather corselet worn over
a long-sleeved mail hauberk; although it is akin to the Eastern
Roman tradition, Prof Babuin has interpreted this as of Italian
origin. These items of equipment are therefore an accurate
representation of the appearance of mercenary troops in
service during the last decades of the Empire – and especially
of those Cretans who, notwithstanding Venetian rule, felt it
their duty to loyally serve the holy Emperor of Constantinople.

sounds interesting can you find picture references?
edit: never mind pics didnt load first time. nice i'll modify the equipment for the next releases.

WOOT! Finally - a chance to play the Ottomans! Thank u for the mod! I wish i was better at this game and so that I could put my skills to the test online,, but right now i beleive i will just have my a$$ handed over to me in a jiffiy by other players
Which leads me to a question; Is this mod purely for online play (as i understand it) or is it even possible to enjoy it in single player mode?
And if not, are there any cool mods out there where the player can join the Ottoman faction?
Cheers!

As far as I know there are no singleplayer mods that has Ottoman faction, and only Wfas mod(not game)-again multiplayer- has Ottomans which werent pretty(kinda rushed ingame).

Very nice mod. I must admit, I've always been fascinated by Byzantine/Ottoman/Turkish history, so it only improves my relations with this mod. I'll try to join the event this Saturday.

Im interested in supporting a server with alot of bots for this mod. Im running a 200 bot server as a demo for this idea right now (for native). Its called Captain Slobots 200 Bot Battle Server (on 24/7). Check it out!
