Got any screenshots? Also be sure to use "recalculate tanget directions" or whatever it's called otherwise the normalmaps don't show up as well.

If you look at the edges of the shield and the edges of the metal, I've added a 1-2px wide border that's blurred slightly, surrounded by a black border. This is usually how I make specular maps and it works out quite well in suggesting edges.
