It's always a good idea to support relatively big enclaves like that with geometry anyway. Not sure how it pertains to the original model but I don't know if a normalmap on its own would cut it for what you're trying.

Edit: Here's little peak on my handpainted tileable stone texture i'm working on. Texture currently only has basic stone shape, shading and color variation.
Starting to paint main details next. Texture is placed on the cube 4x4.
