hmm, ofcourse playing as estonians, i noticed the elder names are mostly russian( Slavic) and even some baltish (the real baltic culture) names. just a question: will it be changed in the next version. also, about yuryev, ( my history is, somewhat bad on estonian history[if going into details]) shouldnt it be under estonian tribes. i know russian principalities conquered it , but by the time of year 1200 estonians had taken it back.
Most of the names from the baltic factions I took them from Crusaders King II, if you have suggestions regarding the estonians ones I will have no trouble changing them... although to be honest a few slavic names in the villages near Russian territory will do no harm (in any case I'd prefer to have a majority of baltic ones).
Regarding Yur'ev... well I don't know, any sources regarding its status around 1200?
I somehow stumbled upon this thread while looking at info about this mod. I don't know if these issues are fixed or not but here's my contribution:
1. Estonians should have Finnic names, as the Baltic tribes have never inhabited the territory of Estonia. On the contrary, in 1200, half of the curonian peninsla was Livonian, the Riga area was Livonian + North-Western Latvia was Livonian. Also, the southern border of the Estonians was considerably more south in 1200 than in the modern days.
2. We cannot talk of any real Russian presence in Estonia before the late 19th century. With the small exception of some Russian "Old Believers" escaping to the western shore of lake Peipsi in the late 17th century. Their number from that time until 2014 has never surpassed 6000 people, most Estonians didn't know they exist before finding about them through the media in the 1920's and 1930's Thus Russian (and Baltic) names for year 1200 Estonians are very illogical.
3. Tartu(only extreme Russian nationalists call it Yurjev), its old Estonian name being Tarbatu, was conquered in 1030. In 1061, the Estonians took Tartu back, burned down the Russian fort built there, slaughtered all the Slavic inhabitants and attacked Pskov for revenge, with devastating results. After 1061 and the attack on Pskov, there's a notable "lack of interest" towards Estonia from the Russian sider for the next 200 years, with minor raids still being done, but nothing big towards this area.
So, Tartu being occupied from 1030 to 1061 by any logic shouldn't mean that in 1200 it is called "Yurjev" and under Russian control.. It should be called Tarbatu and under Estonian control.
4. The Crusader Kings II names for Estonians are a joke and have been reported in the bug section of CK2 live 20+ times
5. Yes, I'm a historian with a diploma, focusing on Northern-European history (Estonia included).
