Getting to grips with flora modding

So I'm trying to use Open BRF to update some flora on warband. Starting with just the trees found on the campaign map. Had some questions.

At the moment I've located the resource map_trees_meshes.brf and the trees.dds it reads for the texture. I've tried importing new models, but when I do I can't work out how I'm supposed to assign that a texture? The import new/texture material just opens a blank chequed map. I'm also not quite sure how the materials.brf works exactly. Do I need to add new textures to the materials.brf, if so how?

Also what determines what pixels are read in a .dds to create the tree texture in game? I mean the default trees.dds has multiple trees in it and at different angles, where do I set what co-ordinates assign a model's texture?

Finally I keep getting this black texture round models when viewing in Open brf instead of the transparent background https://imgur.com/a/kSeXY including on deault non-edited assests, why?
