Remember hearing that on the radio, back in the late 70's or early eighties.  Still funny.

He is archived as Gitlev and the order in '42 to give him his award spells it with the V. But in the preliminary follow-up documents where he is recommended the Medal "For Courage" after review (which is higher than the one originally recommended) the colonel still spells his name Gitler. Not the best nickname you want sticking to you...

Russians add -ev to foreign last names sometimes. My last name ends with -seth so I got it a few times while I was there.
His name was actually Hitler, right? It's not that strange, although probably not much fun for him in that exact time and place.

My mate whose name ends in -rud also got that back as -rov a few times.
