Companions have sp but don't level

So just noticed something about a couple of my companions.

Nusun (your brother) is 254k/225k i sp, and another companion is 132k/128k in sp, should they not have gone up a level?

It even says in the tooltip to gain a toal of -29k sp to gain a level, wtf?

I read somewhere that they can get enough xp to level but the level up is triggered by gaining a skill point. So I guess if they are high level with very high skills they could be accumulating lots of raw xp so they'd have enough for a new level, but not enough for a skill point to trigger the new level.

He just needs to gain a skillpoint somewhere (anywhere) for the next level to pop.
