Simple suggestion - rather then using generic versions of the units cosmetics. Captain bots should copy the players class armour cosmetics. That way each persons unit will have unique appearance. Giving a little extra mileage out of the loot system.
I know originally each persons unit copied their characters face/body. So there is existing structure in the game for this.
