I too would like to see a negotiate and defend option instead of only being able to ignore this. Along the lines of the poacher quest negotiate/bargaining,
1. This caravan is under my protection,
A. Please leave it alone with this money (bargain)
B. Leave it alone or I will be forced to attack - strength of parties is looked at by the opposing lord, hit on relation with lord or lord and clan/kingdom.
C. Attack without warning, definite hit on relations.

I deleted my saves when 1.5.1 came out.
I haven't played in a while but from what i remember i was neutral to all factions and faction A was at war to faction B(single clan no citys/castles) and the caravan from faction A gets attacked from patry from faction B.
It gave me the feeling that it was more an unplanned/unexpected interaction between NPC parties then anything else.

I have been informed that this issue is fixed on our development branch and the fix will be implemented with the upcoming patches. Thanks for reporting!
