MnBComp's next BEAST interview is with the brave dev team who joined for BEAST3.

Meet the TEAM - Taleworlds [TW]

  • So what made TaleWorlds enter a team into the BEAST tournament?
It was actually one of our level and game designers, Paul (NIN3), who approached us with the idea of playing in the tournament. He has been attending the community organised skirmish pick-up matches recently and really enjoys the more structured competitive skirmish experience. He did the rounds on our company Slack and reached out to people to get them involved, and here we are!

  • The TaleWorlds team have played a couple of matches now; have those matches changed your perspective on the competitive game, and if so, how?
A few of the team have been in and around the Mount & Blade multiplayer scene for many years now and have some understanding of the competitive side of the game. But for some of the team, it is certainly a fresh experience. And while they might be being thrown in at the deep end, they seem to be enjoying it so far! So far, the first two matches have been a real challenge for us, but we are starting to come together as a team now and we were really pleased to walk away with a draw in our last match.
Something that is especially interesting to us is to see in these types of matches is the meta strategies that have formed around the maps and factions, and how teams manage their gold. It is also really nice to see that players have come to grips with the flag mechanic and understand how to manipulate the final flag!
It would be safe to say that we see this as a great chance to understand more about the game and how people are playing it.

  • No one expects developers to perform particularly well in a competition against players who dedicate a lot of time to the game, what are the targets for the performance of the team in this tournament?
We are just in it for the fun, to be honest! We started out with the aim of winning a single round, which we managed to achieve in our last match after being utterly destroyed in our first game, so we have already managed to hit that first target. Next, we want to go on and win a game! No doubt it will be difficult, especially with some of us being a bit older and having slower reactions, but we are confident that we can do it!

  • Who usually commands the TaleWorlds team?
Paul (NIN3), leads us in battle. At least, that is how it is meant to work. In reality, he tells us what to spawn as and then where to go, and we somehow find a way to mess it up. It does help that he made some of the skirmish maps that are in the game right now though, meaning that he knows all the little secrets, but our problem right now is just making use of that knowledge.

  • What would you say was the team's favourite map & favourite faction?
As you might imagine, there was a bit of a mixed response to this question as everyone has a personal favourite rather than one that we prefer to play as, as a team. Battania and Vlandia seem to edge the other factions out, mainly due to people liking those factions in general rather than for any gameplay or tactical reasons. For the map, Trading Post is the clear favourite. It is probably the map we are most comfortable with, with it being the first skirmish map that we had in the game, and when you have so many other things going on in the game, a bit of familiarity goes a long way.

  • Will TaleWorlds be able to stream/record matches for the player base to watch?
Yes! You can watch our matches on our Twitch channel at: Taleworlds Twitch

  • Do you have any final thoughts or words for your opponents?
We want to wish everyone the best of luck in the tournament and hope that you all have fun! It is really great for us to see people organising and getting involved in events like these, so thank you all for your efforts. And finally, we look forward to seeing you all on the battlefield!

Congrats on the first victory. Like the others said it's really cool to have you. I hope it's not the last time

Also I wonder how do you deal with our class restrictions?
It must be rather bizarre to the team.

Thanks!

As for the class restrictions, it works well in this format and there was obviously a reason it was decided upon in the first place! However, from our end, it clearly means that we have more work to do on balancing before we see ranked matchmaking implemented in the game.

I dont know if this is enough reason for balancing because this is not purely a question of balancing, are setups with less then two inf even performing well in even matchups ? We dont know. Its partly restriced because of more unfun gameplay, most people prefer to not play against 3+ Archers because its just not fun.
