  1. #SK# --The Kingdom in the Shadow-- a ROCK-based competitive clan

All you really have to do is make it so decisions regarding your clan are handled by objective moderators and your only role in them is as a player/leader of the faction in question. That's it! xP

Right. Once the campaign begins it's fairly easy to avoid both the actuality and appearance of favoritism in specific matters.

It's just the initial stages and global decisions/ rule changes where you can't separate out the decisions that effect my clan that I believe Rhade was concerned about.

Kind of seems like a conflict of interest waiting to happen.

Aren't you the lead admin for ROCK, yet you're also leading a clan that is involved in it?

    :???:

    And yet, people still urge me to join the K-<mammary-related-acronym>. <.<;

Hosting a tournament is one thing, being the lead moderator/administrator in an ongoing, dynamic campaign that is undoubtedly going to be shifting as growing in rules, standards and stability is another.

Just found it a bit odd.

    Not a big deal.

Obviously a this consideration that needs to be addressed.

The campaign is being set up so that once it begins the admins will have an extremely limited role. The only 'power' they will have is in arbitration of disputes of fact between clans and enforcing any sanctions for violation of rules. And these are done in a group fashion. We currently have four, and looking to expand to seven, administrators. The rest of their functions will be simply mechanical duties that are necessary for the campaign to run but don't leave any room for interpretation or bias and also don't provide any 'insider knowledge'. There are no 'random events' or the like that the admins define or get to pick. The campaign is set up to be a sandbox style game where all content and direction is provided by the choices of the players.

So I guess what I'm saying is that the only way an admin could 'stack' the campaign would be in it's set-up phases: the map and the ruleset. The majority of the map work is being done by AlphaDog (a freelancer) and the ruleset will be published before the end of the registration deadline so everyone has a chance to change their info if need be. After the launch of the campaign, it is really out of the control of the admins. I will, of course, still try to direct the flow of the campaign, but that will be as and by my power as a Lord of SK, not as an admin.

That being said, we are also looking at the possibility of (once the campaign begins) having all the decisions normally made by admins instead by vote of the clan leaders. Although there are obviously problems with this strategy. However to assume that a collection of clan leaders would be less bias then a small number of admins is a stretch to be sure. Obviously this last idea isn't finalized and may not be implemented. Although, even if it isn't implemented, I think the risk of (or even ability to) 'admin abuse' is extremely low.

Also, to be completely honest, I wouldn't be willing to do all the work for ROCK if I wasn't going to be able to play it at the end. So... deal with it.

(Just kidding... sort of.  I am definitely going to be playing ROCK, but if people still have concerns about admins abusing the system in favor of their clan, I would love to get them voiced so that we can address them and make any requisite changes to the system.)

Would be interesting to say the least. However, you're probably better off in the modder's section with this topic.

Mila was born a khergit noble and hidden in a village near the vaegir lands when she was an infant. When Mila was five her foster father was killed during a raid when a vaegir horseman hit him with a javelin in the back. He died in front of Mila. She recovered and hid the javelin after her foster mother removed it from her father's corpse. When the fires died and the dead were buried Mila's remaining family moved to a small khergit village near Swadian lands and her mother remarried. When she was nine, war came to visit her again, this time it was the Swadians. During the raid, most of the men were slain including her new father and the women and children were sold to a sarranind merchant. Mila never saw her foster mother again and the child was sold as a servant to one of the Emirs.

When Mila was eleven her best friend and "big sister",also a servant, was killed by the Emir when he was drunk and enraged. Mila plotted revenge and soon afterwards the Emir died a painful death from a powerful neurotoxin. A much older man, who had been playing the role of a servant discovered the paralized, twitching, Emir still in his bed and observed the little girl Mila watching him die.The male servant smiled "you have done my job for me." The assassin took Mila under his wing and introduced her to the sarranid assassins guild. For the next four years Mila killed dozens of men, all the while believing they were "evil" somehow. At age sixteen Mila fled from the guild and returned to the khergit village she lived in the first five years of her life. Mila recovered the javelin she had hidden all those years ago and eventually found and killed (with the same javelin) the retired vaegir horseman that had killed her foster father and destroyed her village. Before she killed him, she learned that his company was employed by a Swadian noble.

From Revadin she traveled to the great library at Dihirim where she discoved her khergit royal lineage and that she was also a descendant of a swadian king before that line was broken by an usurper.Mila eventually settled in the Rhodok lands and got a job at a weavery in hopes of living a simple life. A messenger came one day carrying a chest with armed escorts. The chest contained gold and a note from her dying assassin father...It was her inheritance..gold stolen from the dead Emir and the life savings of her mentor. With the new wealth Mila invested in wineries in Veluca, Yalen and Jelkala. Her new wealth certainly made life easier, but she was still a slave in sense. Mila hated the swadian nobles as they had oppressive dominion over some of the rhodok lands. It seemed she would never live the quiet life she wanted and war was always at her doorstep. One night, while walking in the vineyard, she decided her future would be a path to the throne and to freedom.Taking a large sum of money, Mila paid the bards of Yalen to compose songs and poems about a Queen that would return to free the oppressed. The Swadians executed some of these bards but their tales had succeeded in inspiring dissent. A month later Mila met A Rhodok lord that had been allowed to keep his castle and rule over the local peasants as long as he was loyal to the swadians and as long as he kept the revenue coming. Mila persuaded the Rhodok noble to fight for her cause and he agreed. A few other rhodok land holders raised the queens flag and a rebellion was born. The swadians do not like Mila and refer to her as the Witch Queen. This did not concern the rebel queen...she would win their hearts after she defeated the fat swadian lords.

A tale of yesteryear: stories from Istiniar

There was once a land called Istiniar, reaching from the town of Praven in the north-west to the castle of Jamiche in the south-east. Like many other realms of its time, Istiniar was ruled by one sovereign, the Emperor of Istiniar. But this land wasn’t like the other kingdoms or empires. In this land the people – men and women alike – had the right to participate in the government. They met and they suggested what they thought should be done or not be done and then they discussed and then had a vote. The people of Istiniar were not equal in rights, but compared to their neighbours, the differences between the highest and the lowest Istiniarian was far less pronounced. The Istiniarians knew to value leadership, but they also knew the value of their own rights and participation.

But as it is with many kingdoms of our time, the good times came to an end, when a man, greedy for power, promoted the unsatisfied minds of some and a civil war broke out. And with the help of outside powers, who were loath to see a empire ruled with the people and for the people and who wanted to see it perish from the earth, the insurgent overthrew the Emperor of Istiniar and claimed the land for himself, ruling for coming years as despot over it. The capital of Istiniar, symbol of the Istiniarian identity was sacked and burned, the royal castle razed.

The Guard of Istiniar, an order of old, with noble ideas and sound minded members, stayed true to their Emperor and to their belief of what was a good country. When the Emperor was seized and murdered together with his family, the Guardsmen were in battle with the insurgent and his allies, suffering heavy losses. Decimated in numbers and with low spirits they were warned by friendly souls of what had befallen their Emperor and his family. Forced to flee by the circumstances, they made an oath to reclaim the lands of Istiniar and to restore a government that would represent their values. The Guard then went into exile to muster forces and to recruit brave men to fight for their rights, their empire and their freedom.

    – Gorfanr the Wise, A tale of yesteryear: stories from Istiniar.

    Chronicle of Istiniar

This year went Lord Golian of Epeshe and besieged Culmarr Castle, betraying his oath and Emperor. The Emperor Eothel came with his guard and all the people that followed him to Culmarr and there beat Golian and banished him from Istiniar.

1250 This year the Emperor Eothel went to Ingledes Castle to hold court there and it was in this year that Golian returned with allies from neighbouring realms. War broke out and the Emperor Eothel led his armies into victory at Maras and Azgad.

1251 This year a mighty coalition led by the insurgent Golian and King Harlaus of Swadia attacked Istiniar from all the directions known to men. The various Duchies, Marquessates and Earldoms of Istiniar repelled the attackers many a time, but were taken in the end. The Emperor Eothel ordered his guard and all the brave men of Istiniar to fight a great battle against the invaders near Haringoth, where a mighty enemy army had assembled. The Emperors' men were slain in great numbers. Preparing to ride into battle and help his ferocious fighters the Emperor and all his family was slain by traitors in his own homestead. Opening the gates to the enemy, the same traitors then caused the sacking, burning and razing of town and castle of Istiniar. Disheartened by this loss, the remaining cities and castles of Istiniar fell one after another. Only a few loyal guardsmen could escape the slaughter of Haringoth and they flew upon learning of their beloved kings and countries fate. Local legend says that the guardsmen escaped with parts of the Imperial treasury.

    – Unknown, Chronicle of Istiniar.

Addendum to the Chronicle of Istiniar

1264 This year the former Imperial Guard of Istiniar took back Azgad and from there they prepared for war against those who had stolen the land.

1266 This year the Guard was led to a great victory by their captain Gavin at Haringoth Castle. They rode to war and took and fortified the lands from Praven in the north to Haringoth Castle in the south. In Haringoth the guard held a feast, where they drank wine and had women. And here they also made an assembly and they discussed and decided to continue the realm of old. In this same year Gavin, captain of the guard and respected nobleman of the old realm, was crowned Emperor of Istiniar and there was much rejoicing.

Reveran was a small Rhodok village that had grown into a wealthy town rather quickly due to an abundance of resources near the village. However because of the richdom, King Graveth demanded more taxes from Reveran than from other villages. The rich elite of Reveran however did not accept this policy and paid Hired Blades to defend them from the Kingdom of Rhodoks when they sent a letter to their former King that they'd rather be independent and won't pay the taxes.
King Graveth of course could not ignore such a betrayal and ordered to attack the village. However, the timing was bad, as at the same time the Swadian Count Klargus raided a Rhodok caravan as an act of war. Due to this new war, King Graveth had to send back most of his men to defend the Rhodok-Swadian borders and could only send a rather small group to recapture Reveran and supress the rebellion. The group they sent had still twice as many armed men than Reveran, but although the Hired Blades were rude in manner and cared only about money they fought hard for the village of Reveran. The Reveran militia, farmers with homemade weapons, also got basic combat training, given by Mercenary captain Mahud. They all fought hard for their freedom under the command of militia-captain and son of the village elder Hieronymous "Angryface" Archer and eventually won the battle. King Graveth was too possessed with the Swadian assault that he could not send more men to Reveran, giving Reveran time to develop to a large and walled town, and even some village were built next to it: The Kingdom of Reveran was made.

For dozens of years, the men of the mountains had lived on the borderlands of the Nordic region. During peace, they herded sheep and cut wood, during war, they plundered the enemy villages near the border.
But now, when  Calradia has torn to war, the fierce Cameron clan has come down from the highlands and has taken up arms against the enemy.

Don't know how I missed that thread. My apologies.  :???:

  13. +Previous+ UPDATE: Please excuse our mess...

Alright, I have returned... (Sorry for the title; they were playing LotR on the flight )

I am getting settled in and will respond to all my PM's and update these threads over the next few days.

Here is my first pass though:
(Ignore any previous information in favor of the following; I have not yet been able to update the appropriate threads.)
    • Registration due on or before Sept. 12th. // All Character Factsheets for notables are due on or before the 14th. // Campaign Map published on the 19th. // First Turn Cycle begins the following week.
    • We have received formal registration from Clan Cameron, Court of Reveran, Guard of Istiniar, and the GK Rebels; I will be updating the thread with their info over the next few days.
    • Previously, a CM said that Khergits would be removed from rotation. This is not the case.
    • Clans are assigned a "Starting Modifier" during the registration process. This modifier indicates how much land, money, and army strength with which they begin the campaign. "+100" (the maximum) is double the baseline start. So far, each notable who registers provides +1, and each map submitted provides +2. More information on this paticular topic will be coming over the next few days.
    • ROCK will be looking to clans to provide servers for predetermined time slots. The server will be required to run a native-compatible modification, however this 'mod' will be tooled in such a way that it will not effect or even be visible in 'normal' native play. (Server pledges will also effect Starting Modifier.) This will be discussed later.
    • ROCK will be running a promo event before the launch of the campaign. It will be a mix between a Stratego Game and a Duel Tourney. It will be held on Sept. 10th on an eastern US server. Teams of 10; may mix&match clans. Only those who are registered as a freelancer, submitted their character factsheet, or are a lowborn in a formally registered clan by that date will be able to participate. Full details in a dedicated thread tomorrow. Winners will receive bonuses to their clan's Starting Modifier.

Alright, that's the big points. I'll be doing a major update over the next few days to all the threads.
Just one last thing: I am currently unable to play multiplayer...
So... any help with that would be greatly appreciated.

    All the best,
    Ken

  15. +Previous+ UPDATE: Please excuse our mess...

Apologies for the delay in updating/ answering your questions and PM's. I am currently out of town on business but I will make sure to get to all of them when I return.

If you are concerned about meeting deadlines without answers to your questions, don't panic. As per this thread, we are going to be pushing all of the deadlines back to avoid the outside craziness that occurs during this time.

  16. +Previous+ Your thoughts on ROCK feasibility & schedule?

My vote is for Option 2. Registration has been slow going and I personally have been swamped with work and with preparing to return to university in a couple weeks. So with that and the travel time, my time is/ will be extremely limited. Add that to the fact that some of the clan leaders have expressed the same sentiment, it might be more prudent to wait a bit to launch. (And I just have some cool ideas for a mini-event - and I need an excuse to try them )

Anyway, that's my thought but it's by no means definitive. Please vote and post your thoughts when you get the chance.

Our story begins centuries ago, before the deserts of the Sarranid realm were discovered, our story lies to east of the Nord homeland in a small province ruled by the noble family of Calradius. They were a significant family with lands a legion, a navy,  and even a fortress. This province bordered the true nord lands filled with snow and Icy winds, the family of of Calradius had one son and his name was Dietri. And on a frosty December morning the Nords went to war, tens of thousands followed their Chieftans to the coastline and they boarded there ship’s and sailed to the beach of Calradius the home of Dietri and his family. And at day break the Nords had arrived, they had caught the local militia by surprise and the people of the village fled some were captured some were killed but some survived they rode to the fortress and Dietri was told of the raiders that were a week. He summoned the family forces and  the naval forces as well. He filled the granaries with food and prepared for a long siege. Or so he thought. A week later the Nord host was sited on the horizon. The siege began, for 2 months the fortress held and on the first day of the 3rd month the emperor had come the nords were beat back and they fled for there ships which they found captured by Dietri’s and the emperors navy. The Nords were surrounded and massacred and there homeland was invaded. The Nords fled across the sea and Dietri pursued them. And there he found a new continent he returned with the news the capital. The emperor was known to have no heir but that would soon change.

When Dietri returned with the news he was named Heir by the emperor and given ten full legions to conquer the new land and he was allowed to keep his first legion as his personal legion. After years of warfare the legions were beginning to grow weary they yearned for there family and were tired. Dietri returned with his personal legion to ask the emperor for 20 new legions and retirement papers to disperse among the men. The emperor declined the retirement papers but accepted to give the full force of his armies. The next morning the emperor was found dead in his bed. Some say he died of old age, some he died because his heart gave in, the nobles knew better, and so they did not Challenge the new Crowned Emperor Deitri. And so years later the country of Calradia was formed. The Emperor ruled for many years and his personal legion had become the most decorated legion in the entire Imperial army. But one day the emperor ordered the 1st legion to massacre a town the town had no defenses no soldiers and no lord. The emperor wanted it for himself and the legion refused. The emperor was furious he sent the 3rd legion to attack the town the 1st legion was there to stop them, and so the 3rd and 11th legions were sent and they gave battle to the 1st the battle waged for 3 days and at dawn on the fourth the 1st legion stood triumphant half were dead and the other half was wounded but they lived.

And so the 1st legion was exiled and it was called the Damned legion. But the Damned legion could only operate in the Rhodok mountains where they could lay easy ambushes to the emperors troops. At the battle of Jelkala The Damned legion fought and thus the Rhodok nation was freed and at that moment the Nord people who fled from there homeland rebelled, Vaegirs and the Khergits soon followed and the emperor was forced to sail across the seas forever but that would not happen. The Damned legion laid a trap at the North coast. They dropped stones on the emperors army and charged down the surrounding cliffs using ropes and they fought for 4 days and on the fifth the Knights charged the ripped through to the very center of the emperors forces and the emperor himself was captured the other legions laid down there weapons and fled by sea while the emperor was captured. Then executed at Praven by the Knights of the Damned legion, and that was the last sighting of the legion. Some say they sailed to the lands of Calradius to continue there war on the emperors lands, others say they disbanded and travelled to all 6 kingdoms and founded todays aristocracy of Calradia, and some say they are a legend, that they never existed…………Those with scars know better.

But the Truth of where the Legion went was known to only the Legionnaires themselves. Because each of these theories was true the The Knights of The Damned Legion did found Todays Nobility for all the lords of Calradia today are descendents of those Knights and none of them have any knowledge of this, only the oldest of the Calradian Archivists know of this, but they decide to keep it a secret to there very graves. But the Legionnaires themselves, returned to that very same town that half had died defending. That town was called Ergellon. The men were honest workers the tilled the land, started families, and businesses all over the area. They set up a council where each man could vote for the men who decided small things like the tax rates or declerations of war. And so began a prosperous state that then became its own Kingdom, and after many a century of prosperity and conquests it became the land that today no one remembers, including myself but it consisted of all the land we call Calradia. In the final years of the Kingdom there was a King that had ruled for many a year and he had bean a king loved by the people and the nobles alike, he had but 1 strong son that had quelled many a rebellion and had fought of the Sarranid invaders many a time, and during this Kings reign the Kingdoms we call today Swadia, Rhodoks, Nords, and Vaegirs were all under his control, and the Capital was Ergellon, and also the mightiest Fortress. But the Sarranids and the Khergits were always envious of the Calradians and always attempting to take the land, but were always repelled by the Legions Descendent Nobles. But in one year the Khergits and Sarranids made a plot to bride the Kings brother, for the Kings Brother Harris was envious of his older brother and wanted his throne. So the Brother slaughtered all the Royal family and took the Throne, throwing the Kingdom into chaos, and shattering the Kingdom into 4 smaller Countries, The Kingdom of Nords, The Kingdom of Swadia, The Kingdom of Vaegirs, and The Kingdom of Rhodoks. But, Harris had made 1 large mistake, he had forgotten of the Kings Son Archeus, for he had bean away Campaigning, with the Royal Legion. And when he returned he stormed the palace and killed his Uncle. But himself taking a Mortal Wound, The Legion had Captured Ergellon but at what cost, as Archeus lay dying he knew that his small legion could not reconquer what was lost, and that Ergellon must be protected. And so The Guard of Ergellon was born. The Guard quickly recaptured the surrounding Region and protected the people, the descendents of The Damned Legion, from the Fortress of Ergellon. And to this day they watch over there lands waiting for a chance to reconquer there lost lands and avenge the death of there Kings, only then will they rest, only when they Avenge there forgotten Empire…

Over the mountains and across the vast sea to the West lies a distant land known only as Balion. The people of Balion would be nigh unknown to the commoners of Calradia, if it were not for their sudden and persistent presence.

Years ago, a young man by the name of Konrad set sail from his home in Balion, determined to define his own destiny as a legendary mercenary along with a small band of followers. His ship met the shores just outside the Swadian city of Praven, and there Konrad found his first employer. The Balion mercenaries stayed loyal to the Swadian king and, under the command of Konrad the High Balion, they laid waste to any men foolish enough to threaten the kingdom.

Many generations later, misfortune took hold of the Balion establishment when the standing High Balion suddenly disappeared. Months passed as rumours began to spread, and false fortune detailing the collapse of the Balion mercenaries swept the land. The Balion presence slowly shrank as scores of troops embarked for home and it was not long before only a small group of brave men remained. It was then that the present king of Swadia decided that such a small number of men would be no help against the growing Rhodok opposers, and declared the Balions free of their bonds.

The people of Calradia thought this to be the end of the Balion mercenaries, until an unknown man stood up from the group. He laid claim to the captain title and vowed that he would return the mercenaries to their former glory. The new captain then took his men and made a decision that any other credible mercenary leader would, and sought employment amongst his former employer's enemy, the Kingdom of Rhodoks. But it was soon after that chaos took the land, and the Rhodok kingdom fell to ruins. With its fall went the Balion mercenaries' new commitments, and they were once again without work.

Frustrated at this trend of mishaps, the new Balion captain claimed land for himself within the old Rhodok kingdom, breaking the age-old tradition. No longer were they the Balion mercenaries, no longer were they outlanders, no longer would they be left without permanent homes, and most of all, no longer would they answer to a king.

'Only a mad dog would take such actions!' said an astonished man in the crowd. To which the Balion captain responded, 'So be it.'
