What actually happens if you never repair your ships? (Answered)

I've been trying to search everywhere for the answer.

Do you lose all your men in the sinking ship if the ship somehow gets destroyed while traveling? Or what happens?

I think everyone's always been too paranoid to risk it .

I got one ship to very Dangerous but caved in and paid the huge repair bill O__O

No but that could be because I didn't have enough men in my fleet to occupy the destroyed ship. So I'm not sure if you will lose men.
