Can we get back on topic? Anyway...

I don't use companions much, except as "aides" (i.e. fodder for the Finnish Riflemen (or anyone else))
 
I use Companions a lot because I like to have a small force... Kind of like a flanking force for aiding the larger armies? I don't think this game has so much to do with Tactical approaches other than your entire army on a hill, or your entire army behind cover, or some calvary charge from the flanks of already engaged infantry.... I wish you could divide your army into like Companies, but alas.....

Anyways, are we discussing current Companions or New Companions, or just the General Aspect of Companions?
 
i generally mount most of my companions, and use them as my only cavalry in this mod, with the exception of my doctor (wound treatment, surgery,  and first aid), my engineer, and my frontiersman (tracking, pathfinding, and spotting), to which i give the strongest and heaviest armour i currently have, and put them at the bottom of the troop list to try to keep them out of action.

lol i didnt understand this myself until a couple of days ago.  the troops at the top of your party list are the first troops that go into battle.  so if you have the max standard battle size (100), and you and your enemy combined have over 100 troops, then the units at the bottom of the party list will not spawn immediately.  if you loose enough troops and you get reenforcements, then they will spawn.  the tactics skill also comes into play, not exactly sure how though.

at least, this is how i understand it.

Well.. There is this "form ranks" thing. And that would give you the ability to form companies. But first off it is a very inpractical and complex thing. And and last. It is very hard to implant if I got it right.

But like I see it. Since the armies are so small - do I see them more like small battalions. That is wondering around. And the real army is when they do a "campaign".
 
i use the battlesizer mod and play with 100 guys, and all the smoke clouds from the muskets sometimes makes the game freeze and crash.


its really awesome though, seeing big clouds of smoke rising in the distance and the distant sound of gunfire, and then the whizzing and cracking sounds of bullets hitting all around you
