In the campaign I joined the Empire as a mercenary and have fought with them for a few in game months. Now they are at peace and I want to leave the faction however if it do either by using the Kingdom menu screen or by talking to the ruler, I get -20 relations with the lords in the Empire. Is this supposed to happen even as a mercenary and is there any way fix it currently?

I have a friend who had the same issue. He went from +20 to -20. Seems strange to get that penelty only for being a mercenary.
Just came across this issue myself it is the same hit you get if you leave as a vassal which is very odd and defeats the purpose of joining them as a mercenary.
A little annoying as i dont want to join a faction in my last playthrough I joined Vlandia as a vassal and Derthert hated me i ended up at -79 with him for no apparent reason. I was denied access to castles he owned and anytme i tried to vote myself a castle he used his veto to take it himself so i couldnt have it.
Wanted to just play merc for a bit capture and release lords to raise my relations with them and eventually start my own kingdom.
