Private Server Question

Hi all,
I wish to ask a rather nooby question about creating a server just to play with a friend over the net.

The problem is when I create a server, it never appears in the server list and therefore I can't play a private game with my friend.

Is there any way to make my server appear in my friend's server list so that we can play privately?

I know this sounds like a stupid question but I can't seem to find a way yet

You need to open ports on your router to make a hosted game visible to the internet. Which ports, you should be able to find in the forum somewhere.
