Open launcher not 'launching' - steam version

Longtime player here, since the original M&B days. I felt a twinge of nostalgia and purchased the steam version, but it won't run.. going into even viewer throws up the following two error messages, seconds apart:

Can you check if your anti-virus software whitelisted the game or not?
What is your PC specs and OS?
