How to use pre-battle orders and the in-game orders

I've been playing the single player for a bit and whenever I fight, I'd tell them to brace spears or something like that and they wouldn't move for the rest of the battle. I'd really like some advice on how to use this properly.

 

[Seek n Destroy]

Brace spears is not correctly implemented right now. If you use it and they stop moving, search in the in-game panel the end order option. It's in the last menu if I remember correctly.
