How to Command a Siege Defense

I've been playing a new playthrough and i cant seem to actually be able to command the siege defense of a town/castle. It automatically starts the battle without a pre-deployment. What do I need to do? Anyone else have this problem?

My experience says it´s random. But it can also be that third party fix that annoys people. Say there is a carvan in town. Or garrison is one party, militia is another that makes you the third party.
Most likely it´s the third party rule that messes things up.

You supposed to run back and forth doing dum stuff like in those siege trailers they showed in 2016. I've always had one or another problem with defensive siege, so I haven't done one in long time. It's always easier to just sally out and fight in the field.
