Hello, I'm frolof. New to the forum. I posted this on the wrong forum before, so a kind soul redirected me here.

So I had this Mount & Blade original mod that I loved to play with called "Scandinavian Mod" . Google it will ya? I am not allowed to post links yet.

Problem is, the mod had crashes during battle at random occasions. Some blamed the smoke effect to be the issue, but I have tried to remove the
smoke effect in particle_systems and reduced effect to 1, but to no effect. Changing battle size matters not as well as responded by other users.
Something with the shooting of muskets and pistols seems to be to blame here.

I'd love to be able to fix this myself, but alas I am but a poor pleb when it comes to modding in Mount and Blade.
It was my favorite mod that I just can't seem to depart from, but I am unable to play it.
Anyone willing to lend a helping hand? Perhaps it's a small issue that might only take a couple of minutes!  :shifty:

[01-19 EDIT]: A solution has been found so far.

Install Mount and Blade Enchanced edition. (Thanks InVain.) Install it seperately on desktop or something. Do not replace Steam version.
Download Large Address Aware. It will make the game utilize more RAM. (Thanks InVain.)
(Check first reply for links provided by InVain.)

And the important part, change the particle_systems.txt with another mods particle_systems.txt. The Scandinavian mods particle_systems.txt is broken.
so I downloaded a similar mod (Europe 1805 [v1.0B] https://www.nexusmods.com/mountandblade/mods/2413 ) and extracted the files.
I found its particle_systems.txt and replaced Scandinavia mods particle_systems.txt. So far it has not crashed and I've tried my best to make it crash.

I'll continue to play and see if there's something else.

After further testing, I've realised how delicate this needs to be performed. I couldn't make it work on my C disk, so I installed the game on my D disk instead. I've played like 10 battles without any crashes.

[EDIT]: Alright, so another bug has been found.

The game works fine, but as soon as I make a save, restart the game and enter the same battle the game crashes when the units fire.
It's almost like my fix never mattered.

What could be the cause of this?

[01-20 EDIT]: I kept digging, and I might have found the true source of the problem.

The mod strictly crashes when the gun fires. So that lead to the sound being the problem. The Sound folder was simply loaded with gun.wav files. I replaced the sound files and sound.txt with another mod (More Metal Sound Mod) and it seems compatible. I have a hard time making the mod crash to this point.

But I will be on my guard.

[01-20 EDIT FINAL]:

So here I am, at the end of the road. I've fixed the mod to a working state! Thanks for those who's been tagging along!

Is it the 'vertex buffer' crash? Are you using the enhanced version? (http://www.moddb.com/games/mount-blade/downloads/mountblade-1011-fall-2009-enhanced-version)
You could also try making your game exe large address aware to utilize more RAM: https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/large-address-aware.112556/

No vertex buffer issue, it just stats "Mount and Blade has stopped working"

I do not use the Enhanced version. Should I do it or should I not?
I'll take a look with the RAM thing.

Thanks a lot for your help

Nope, didn't work  I installed enhanced version along with the RAM utilizer. Still crashes when they begin firing with their rifles. But it did hold itself for a while.

I was supposed to replace the files in common/mount and blade with the mount and blade enchanced right? Or did I do something wrong?

Ok, I think I may have fixed it. I replaced particle_systems.txt with another particle_system from an another mod called "Europe 1805".

That helped me with the issue so far with no crashes. Now I will take a look if it works with or without enhanced version or RAM utilizer.

[EDIT]: After further testing, I've realised how delicate this needs to be performed. I couldn't make it work on my C disk, so I installed the game on my D disk instead. I've played like 5 battles without any crashes.

Another update. I think I might have found the true source of the issue. I managed to find out that the issue strictly comes when someone fires the weapon. Aka, when it's supposed to go "boom". Which leads to the sound. I replaced the sound files with another mod that was compatible and I have a hard time making it crash. Once I am satisfied I will make a file to the mod in Repository. (My very first mod fix here.)
