Failing to understand why I die in 2 hits wearing chainmail by sword

Can someone explain the armour mechanic to me. I die in the same amount of hits as someone who is wearing no clothes while I'm wearing chainmail. I'm confused as to why a person wearing no armour isn't felled in one blow with a greatsword yet I die in 2 hits from same greatsword wearing chanimail. Which in real life would have very little effect at all.

Attacks do different damage depending on variety of factors. The more you play, the more you get an instinctive feel for the underlying mechanics. Especially the timing is important.

Damage is not a static value.  Velocity of the attack and different points in the swing arc are important variables for damage.  Your movement, positioning, and timing will therefore effect the final damage delivered.
