I have been thinking of the trade items. i think if your a craftsman or you should be able to hire a Bowery specialist, and an armorer as well as a blacksmith and the trade items you collect will add to the things you can craft. and if you have fiefdom you should be given the option to construct an armory.
With that when separating your armies into separate categories or classes, you are able to select your inventory, as well as from your armory to be issued to the respective troops. If you have the Spear-men at your disposal you should be given the option to equip them with a shield a 1h or 2h sword and a pole arm. So in essence you are providing these men with proper weapons that fit the class they are identified as. Archers are given a short bow, long bow, yeomen bow, a yew bow, and so forth. If you have guardsmen you should be given the option to give them halberds and other said polearms.
with them being unexperienced they are subject to less quality like cracked or rusty items. and as time goes on... you can upgrade them. I also think you should be able to suit up your troops in respective armors so you can identify there class during battle.
If you have swordsmen you should be able to give them chainmail armor as a whole unit as well as a particular helmet, and archers with leather and helmet, and knights with plate and so forth, also they should all be forced to wear the colors you designate such as archers wear green tabards with a green flag (your symbol of course) swordsmen with grey flag or what ever you designate to be there colors.
I was thinking something along these lines, as soon as I read the OP. However, instead of seperate units, so to put it, you could go for a Total War kind of thing. Basically squad-commanders who lead their troops under your command. They use their share of gold and loot to equip their squad, and you can increase as well as lower the percentage of loot they aquire, and what-not. If you feel the troops need to progress faster in the changing of gear, you can give the commander money to buy equipment.oRGy said:*Suggestion*

If you have no territory then you would have to pay manually.
Maybe give low rank soldiers sub standard weapons so they cost less.
And one more idea, what if you can keep the equipment of your dead soldiers after battle? That way you can recycle weapons and armor. Assuming you win of course.
