Arming your own troops? Hm?

Users who are viewing this thread

some mods or whatever let you set orders for how your companions update. Unfortunately they update according to item worth, not item stats. I had someone on horseback select a balanced falchion as weapon instead of a sword

The idea I had concerning this was you can set the standard equipment for each troops as opposed to treating each one like a hero. Say I have a group of spearmen, I can arm them to the teeth or have them run around naked but it only affects all of them. The trade-off to this is up-keep goes up dramatically depending on what you equip and would allow for either an elite band or a decently armed massive army.

outfitting each soldier would be a nightmare.......i have my hands full with just the hero characters....however i like the idea of having all knights or all archers use specific equipment.  if your battling sarradins or kherjits then you would have your soldiers pick longer weapons or two handers.  if they are going up against veagirs with all those archers then they should have shields and one handed weapons.  sounds like a good mix of customizability and user friendliness.

I think this can be implemented with this suggestion:

About your own faction troops.

I know this is a bit out of date to be replying but I find a lot of the ideas to be great.

I have been thinking of the trade items. i think if your a craftsman or you should be able to hire a Bowery specialist, and an armorer as well as a blacksmith and the trade items you collect will add to the things you can craft. and if you have fiefdom you should be given the option to construct an armory.

With that when separating your armies into separate categories or classes, you are able to select your inventory, as well as from your armory to be issued to the respective troops. If you have the Spear-men at your disposal you should be given the option to equip them with a shield a 1h or 2h sword and a pole arm. So in essence you are providing these men with proper weapons that fit the class they are identified as. Archers are given a short bow, long bow, yeomen bow, a yew bow, and so forth. If you have guardsmen you should be given the option to give them halberds and other said polearms.

with them being unexperienced they are subject to less quality like cracked or rusty items. and as time goes on... you can upgrade them. I also think you should be able to suit up your troops in respective armors so you can identify there class during battle.

If you have swordsmen you should be able to give them chainmail armor as a whole unit as well  as a guards helmet, and archers leather and knights plate and so forth  also they should all be forced to wear the colors you represent.

I would love to have the option to choose how you troops should look like, not to provide them with better gear.
Like you would be able to choose their armor, but not change their original stats.

Example; You talk to your Swadia Knights, let me pick you equipment/OR simply have the option to choose surcoats for them, in the different colors and you own banner one.

So I get the feeling of having my personal army as a king.
Ive tried to use troop editor, but didn't seem to work with savegames =i

ok i think when you start your own faction you should be able to customize your troop tree like you can pick from 3 base trees, horses(like khergits) mixed(Swadia or vagriers) or infantry(Nords Rhodocks)  depending on what you chose you will get a boost for all of your soldier classes except for mixed who can only pick 2 to have higher levels.  Anyways next part should be similar to online you get X amount of denars for each level to customize your troops how ever you want like 500=1st teir 2000=sencond 3000=3rd 6000=4th 10000=5th.  you can give each class up to 4 different loadouts(huscarls are perfect example some have shieldsand one hand axe +throwing axe some are  2h axe+throwing axe some are sword some are spear) this way when i destroy the vagriers cause i want my kingdom to be in the snow like Angmar(LOTR) i dont have a bunch of guys running around in fur jackets with lame hats

It's probably not a new idea, but i think it would be good to have a 'pool' of available items, which your units can equip them selves from.

Each unit can take equipment from this pool before battle commences. Should the pool not contain enough equipment, then that unit goes to battle without any equipment at all.

To increase the amount/type of equipment in the pool you should be able to either purchase items from markets, or place looted items collected after a battle into it.

For example, your pool contains the following items:

2x Spear
1x Leather Jerkin
1x Leather Boots
1x Leather Gloves
1x Leather Helm
1x 2 Handed Sword
1x Plate Mail Hauberk

So, before battle your 2 Spearman go to the pool and collect the following items,

2x Spear
1x Leather Jerkin
1x Leather Boots
1x Leather Gloves
1x Leather Helm

Spearman 1 has a spear and the items, and because there is not enough equipment in the pool, spearman 2 only has 1 spear to use.

The game can maintain a list of equipment that unit classes can use, so a Spearman can only equip Leather and Spears, a Knight could equip all armour, but only 1h/2h swords, maces and shields.

hopefully you get my meaning, but if you dont.. meh!

If I understand correctly, are you suggesting that you need to have enough individual equipment in your inventory to equip every person in your 80+ man army? Jeeze, I find it hard enough to scrape together enough quality equipment for my heroes.

My suggestion would be that in the 'talk' option in each of your troops, there would be a 'show me your equipment', like with the regular party members. You only need to equip that one inventory screen, and all soldiers in that troop will be equipped with that.

However, that could make things overpowered pretty quickly. Some restrictions I could think of is that only higher tiers of soldiers can equip higher types of gear, only being able to equip the highest tier soldier/ ones from your personal kingdom, or the more expensive the gear raises the wage of the soldiers. Eh, probably would need some fine tuning.

agree and disagree because:
- then each unit needs there own name (example if i have 13 units i would talk to one and arm him but what about the rest?)
- they would put on armor that is better than the default but if you take it off there is there default if its worse they wont equip
- it would be hard for the makers of the game to do it tho but i like the idea (sorta)
well thats what i have to say its ok  :???:

I was thinking something along these lines, as soon as I read the OP. However, instead of seperate units, so to put it, you could go for a Total War kind of thing. Basically squad-commanders who lead their troops under your command. They use their share of gold and loot to equip their squad, and you can increase as well as lower the  percentage of loot they aquire, and what-not. If you feel the troops need to progress faster in the changing of gear, you can give the commander money to buy equipment.
Of course, he will only spend the money in towns, and you can tell him what to improve, etc, etc in the conversation screen.

No idea how well this could work, but... Eh... Do weigh in.

I don't know how you would go assigning the equipment but as for paying for it, you could arm your troops for free if you have a town or castle under your control as you can tell blacksmiths to make what you want (you are there lord after all) this way you could have a well equipped, professional army; in contrast to the ragtag army of a mercenary.
If you have no territory then you would have to pay manually.
Maybe give low rank soldiers sub standard weapons so they cost less.
And one more idea, what if you can keep the equipment of your dead soldiers after battle? That way you can recycle weapons and armor. Assuming you win of course.

Thank you, it took forever to find the pic.

Maybe not outfitting each individual soldier, but perhaps blanket outfitting every troop you have of a certain class, such as giving all of your archers barbed arrows.

That would, in turn, open up possibilities for creating your own troops when you establish your own kingdom, rather than having to work with the dregs of whatever faction's village you took.

You have to pay to upgrade troops now so isn't that like buying them armour and weapons admittedly 80 denars isn't very much to afford a sarranid mamlukes full equipment.
