The Battle of The Thirty is an anual event held at the anual Pennsic War -the largest roughly medieval "gathering" in the world  (10,000+ participants).  It's held under the auspices of the SCA, and the SCA as we know has a history of less than stellar attentivenes to historical detail and authenticity in its presentation.   The Battle of The Thirty is an effort to change that -radically.

And the pictures came out really, really well.

This is, of course, another "look at the pretty pictures!" thread.  It's also a reminder to us all that cloth was an integral and very visible part in the atire of any battle dress, and that we shouldn't forget about it in M&B just because the metal bits might be more interesting.

But for the most part, just look at the pretty pictures.     There's a lot more where these came from.

do you have any shots of 10000 participants ? would like to see forces of this size..

sure, but don't expect them to look as good as these guys.   :???:
The point of the Thirty is to get the best from one certain period and once certain place, all into one place, at one time.  That's very rare.  There are lots of guys who look good -even amazingly good- but the sources of their suits are scattered over the better part of fifteen centuries or more, and across three continents.

As for the 10,000, they're never all in one place, you see.  The field battle is the biggest and even that doesn't come close.  But damn, it IS a big battle.  No one picture can take in the scope, because there are no hills or high places to look down on the battle.  Arial photography would do it, but that's a wee bit beyond our budget.

For those who wanted to see larger fights here is a good sampling:

It's a shame they put music over it since on of the more impressive aspects is the sound (If you cant be there to feel the ground shake).

There's nothing quite like that dull roar, is there?

On the other hand, as a culture the SCA fights very quiet.  There's a few grunts and a lot of yelling for orders and encouragement, but nothing like the screams and battlecrys that we're told filled the old battles.

I have often looked at the field and thanked God that I did not have to go through something like that for real.

There have been two times in my life where i did think I was going to die....each one was at an SCA war.

Once I was pinned in a pile of people three deep while others fought standing on us. (back then the marshals were not so quick to clear the dead).

The other I was in the middle of a bridge battle press in a chain hauberk and it was so tight that I could not move. I honestly thought I would suffocate then as well.

I know some one who fought there...Also I've been to Gulf Wars (early march). In a year or two I have my armor finished.

 *fap fap fap*

Sigh...how come all of these knights in shining armour are middle aged guys (no pun intended) with pot bellies?
varalight- lol those guys sound like crazy hippies.

Well, I knew one who was a professional football player for the Bills. Who made no bones about it being the most physicaly demnding and rough sport he had ever done.

You go to Arizona, in August, put on 75 lbs of gear and fight full contact from 10 am to 3 pm for a few days and then begrudge them thier potbellies.

because by the time you can AFFORD to buy that kind of armor, you're middle aged.  And odds are, by then you'll have a pot-belly.  just hope you still have the strength and stamina to fight around it.

Never a problem with our lot- the tactics get doled out on masse at the begining, and then there's a lot of warcries and shouting. However, I'm fortunate enough to have a carrying voice to rally or redirect troops.

75 pounds of armour?  Try walking around in shorts and a T-shirt for that long, that's grueling.  Something I have to go through every year.

By the way Brasidius, do you live in Arizona?

I have some questions:
1.Is this event related with the 30 year war wich strated 1618-1648
2.Where is it in wich country
3.Could i participate

No, this is an ode to the Combat of the Thirty (March 27, 1351), in the war of succession for the duchy of Brittany.

It's in the United States.  at the annual Pennsic war, in Pennsylvania.

I don't know the exact requirements for it but, you probably need to be 18.

Also, your kit must be overwhelmingly (if not entirely) historically correct, from the 14th century, peferferably from the period between 1325 and 1375 with exceptions granted to exceptional kits, have SCA heavy weapons authorization, and I *think* you need to be nominated to take part.

Actually my armour weighs less than that, but with shield and sword it gets right around there. SCA armour is also heavier often than original since well, they often just didn't want to die, we would like to avoid being bruised too badly.

I live in beautiful downtown Burbank CA. 6-8 hours from Goodyear AZ where the Estrella war started.
