Revamp of all armies! Historians needed!

Excellent idea! And doing so maybe you can avoid having the javelin bag, as it doesn't look very well and would be caried on the horse.

I deleted javelins and jarids bags few days ago. Same with some ugly dagger sheats and spears.

Do you happen to know where in the code is the combat behavior AI? I briefly looked for it but could not find it in the module system.

I know some mods have customized AI, so I most likely just missed it. If it is there, it may be relatively simple to tailor something specific for a mounted thrower.

Good idea! So I need to give horsemen only few javelins and it will work correctly?
should be very easy to test.

With troop editor: give caravan guards javelins, flag guarantee missile.
With weapon editor: change number of javelins to 1.
Start a new game and attack a caravan.
Tell you men to hold position and the caravan guards always charge in before the other troops - watch what they do.

I may try this later if I have some time.

I just tested this on native. The caravan guards were given 1 javelin and this is what they did most of the time:
Charge at me, then turn to their right 90 degrees to throw their javelins. After they release it, they drew their weapon and came to attack.

Since I had only a few men with me, it meant that they did a quarter circle to our left flak, threw the javelin and attacked our flank. They has some issues with releasing it since they were blocking each other's line of fire. Therefore it took a short while till they all shot it and they were charging in sporadically. If their infantry was close enough and started to engage, it actually turned out quite good.

They never throw the javelin while moving AT you. Only when they have their left side turned to you.

Throwing troops (both cavalry and infantry) were backbone of most of Dark Ages armies. Cavalry before charge and hand-to-hand fight were throwing javelins. It's such a pity, that I can't implement this tactic in Mount & Blade.

But removing couched lancing will be easy, just removing some flags from items.

You are right, I've been reading about Breton cav. that fought Franks in 7th. century. They were mounted javeliners and some even archers.
Irish fought relatively armored vikings the same way, by throwing short javelins, and many irish warriors were so skillful at it that they were able to catch the javelin and hit back.

As for the game, I suggest that you place "cav. javelins" as unique items, make them cause more damage, make horsemen have better throwing skill, and make them have 2-3 in the bag, not more.

The Caledonian warrior is 2nd century so a bit out of time scale. The helmet can eventually be a basis for gaelic helmets. The shields can fit, not the rest.

I would like to see really powerful javelins with various strenght. A warrior won't carry many of them, but one good javelin would kill an unarmored man, and two to three javelins would make a round shield useless. It would be even worse with an angon, only one would destruct a shield but it would be carried only by germanic elites by one or two missiles.
Of course all of this would have to be balanced in terms of gameplay... It would be essential aswell a man could still protect himself with his shield while throwing his javelin.

Great looking ss
'Bout Javelins issues, I'm currently have EG III and PoP2 mods on my comp which I played frequently, and they both have javelineers employed, so I experienced few of them:
- To make throwing javelins effective, the throwing skill should be roundly 400+ so they can actually hit on max range (which AI always throw when they sighted enemy on the range - under 400 skills and their javelins only for show). Throwing skill have to be individually fixed (I saw most of mods make all skills at the same range but since I'm not a modder, I dont understand why - Only EG III had raised such differents and most PoP javelin users are elites so their weapon skills are at ~400 already )
- Calvary javelins doesnt do much damages if it hits another running calvary (I think it related to speed/weight issue - have been experiment in PoP, 32 P dmg throwing spear only do 12-25 dmgs if I hit another horseman while chasing).
- Mounted warriors equipped with javelins are treated as ranger. PoP solved this by making calvary javelins invisible and give them only 2 javelins, it worked and the game marked those mounted javelineers as melee mounted units (you have to ask Saxon for details). Or in some other mod (I cant recall which mod), mounted javelineers only given 2-3 javelins and high skills so when they are out of javelins (which are quick), they charge very soon.
- Javelins vs Shields issues: As I understood, Dark Age shields are weak and break up after 1 or 2 javelins. So that's why javelins are so effective while there's no proffesional archer army available). Not in M&B when a normal shield could widthstand 8-10 javelins without problem (even with effective to shield tag on the throwing weapon). So I think lower shield HP/resistance for lower tier army should work, and higher tier warriors would be able to afford better shields to windstand javelins.

Germanic warriors:

"And so the bravest nations tore themselves to pieces. For then, I think, must have occurred a most remarkable spectacle, where one might see the Goths fighting with pikes, the Gepidae raging with the sword, the Rugi breaking off the spears in their own wounds, the Suavi fighting on foot, the Huns with bows, the Alani drawing up a battle-line of heavy-armed and the Heruli of light-armed warriors."
- Jordanes, Battle of Nedao

Some really good stuff here.

For Gaels, try to go for less boots, try to get some basic shoes modelled for them. The very large celtic shield isn't appropriate here. It can go for some Pictish elite, that's all.

For Saxons, remove the shield with spine: that's celtic stuff (or placeholder maybe). Maybe get some more color variety for their dress. Otherwise, large shields for the elite (such as vanilla huscarl ones).

Some ideas for other mercenaries:

According to Arthurian TW mod leader when he was trying to get some troop variety and regional specifics. That means, no evidence at all, even if it is not 100% impossible

I'll do the same. Even there is no evidence for that, I'll keep this unit to get variety.
