Knight at Arms
New roamer types would add a lot to the game, especially the early game. By roamer I mean the little parties that aimlessly, or somewhat aimlessly, roam around the map. Here are just a handful of possible types:
  • deserters: Bandits with faction gear.
  • poachers: Bowmen who roam around forests. Slight chance to be hostile.
  • hermits: Lone people who live away from the towns and cities.
  • slavers: Bandits who try to sell you into slavery. If your party is stronger than their party they try to sell you slaves.
  • manhunters: Bandit hunters.
  • highwaymen: Bandits who hang out alone, or in small groups, near roads and charge a toll if the player is alone or in a small group.
  • lone merchants: Merchants who travel alone but don't carry much.
  • exiles: People from far away lands.
  • heroes: Wandering heroes with various personalities and scripts.
  • fishermen: Fishers who hang out near water and have fish.
  • herbalists: People who roam around collecting herbs. They might sell the player items that temporarily increase healing rates.
  • assassins: Contract killers. They might ignore the player and head straight to a particular destination, or they might try to kill the player for practice if the player seems weak. They might occasionally have special loot, like unique throwing knives. For enough money they could be recruited.
  • smugglers: People who transport contraband.
Many of these roamer types would be very rare. Some might have quests, or items to sell, or be recruitable. Many roamer types might have multiple scripts attached to them, so they might behave differently from other roamer parties of the same type. For example, one lone merchant might be in a hurry and refuse to talk to the player, while another might allow trade.

Freaking great ideas if those were implemented we wouldn't have to zoom out all the time to make the game interesting
