No, I didn't use any mods.
Summary: Horse-archer companions in group five spawn too close together, as if they were infantry in shield wall. They also spawn in front of the infantry, so if you order the infantry to charge without moving the companion-wall, some of the latter get stuck on the companion-wall.

Furthermore, if you order these companions to move, they will be unhappy with their new position, with one or more of them constantly rotating and fidgeting, trying to get comfortable with the new position, which interferes with their ability to shoot.

Finally, if you tell these companions to change formation, they will enter a new (also wrong) formation; for example, if you order them to line formation, they will form a sort of column, single-file. Loose formation is similarly whack.

The only workaround is to, at the start of each battle, click-and-drag Group 5 to a long line before returning them to "face enemy" mode. This unnecessary fiddly, time-wasting step wasn't necessary in version 1.5.6 or earlier; this is a relatively new bug.

How to Reproduce: Put four or more companions into Group 5 and equip them all with bows and horses, and obtain perhaps 15 infantry troops. Enter a battle and immediately tell the infantry to charge, without issuing an order to the companions. Note that the pile-up causes the infantry line to be completely disorganized when it reaches the enemy, with some troops so far behind that they may not arrive until all of their comrades are slain.

Next, order Group 5 to move somewhere. Note that when they get there, they are unable to maintain a line on account of being too close to each other.

Next, order Group 5 to change to various formations. Note that they're uber screwed up.

Have you used cheats and if so which: No

Media: Screenshot shows starting position of Group 5 companions (front center), in the way of the four infantry behind them. Compare Group 5's too-tight spacing with the normal spacing of the horse archers in Group 4, on the right.

(The cavalry in Group 3 on the left are partially blocking the archers in Group 2, on account of Group 3's spawn being messed up by the presence of a cliff, which is another issue altogether.)
