In Progress Login Failed, Could not connect to the server

Summary: When loading the multiplayer game I am prompted with "Not Logged In, You can press the login button to establish connection". After hitting the login button I repeatedly receive this message "Login Failed, Could not connect to the server". I have reinstalled the game and allowed it to bypass my firewall with no change.

the servers are down for everyone. no one can play

Im having this same issue after the 1.1.6 update. What should I do? It won't let me log in to multiplayer.
