How to level?

Where can I level my troops and my character without too much harm?
I find it hard to assemble a big experienced army to attack my first castle (in order to found the first kingdom)...

Sea raiders near Tihr. Easy to kill with horse and lance. Each gives lots of experience.

Can I make it so that my horsed companions enter combat on foot?
I ask this because I want fast map travel speed but also better performance (on foot) in a fight...

Ah, and does anybody know if it's savegame compatible if I change the invasion day?

EDIT: What do you think is the best position for the first castle?

Not possible, except ordering them to dismount just when battle starts. Or the hassle of removing horses just before contact.

Should I join the Swadians or also accept vassalage?

BTW how can I recruit Swadian troops?
