My party is able to run around the map but any interaction that would cause a screen to come up (entering villages/castles/towns, trying to talk to other lords both friendly and hostile, running squarely into looters) instead just pauses the game.
My assumption is that it is related to being in an army that was losing its cohesion going into a siege battle. We won the battle, the castle and related village transferred, and the army disbanded, kicking everyone out. The NPC lords can interact with other things, just not my player character's retinue.
