Vladik

Bio
Vladik was born to a peasant family far in the east. Life of a peasant was hard and constant raids to his home village made it even harder. When Vladik had reached the age of twenty, the elder of the village gathered everyone capable of holding a weapon to defend the village and stop the raiding for good. Vladik also grabbed a spear and prepared to fight for the life of his family and himself. The villagers fought bravely against the attackers, but were eventually slain. Those who had survived the battle were left to die and the raiders burned the village to the ground. Somehow Vladik managed to survive and he made his way to the nearest town. Vladik vowed to become a great warrior and avenge the death of his family.

Rickard Black

Age: 44

Rickard Black is the commander of a small company of mercenary crossbowmen. They call themselves the Iron Reach, because, as the saying goes, nothing has a longer reach than a crossbow. Rickard lives for three things- money, reputation, and killing noblemen. The first isn’t hard to come by in war-torn Calradia, and the second is easy enough to maintain if you don’t break contract, and as for the third…. Well - killing noblemen in peacetime means the noose, but in war the enemy is fair game, and mercenaries get to choose their side.
Rickard’s dislike of the landed class dates back to his youth, but no-one can get any more out of him than that. He is a taciturn man who speaks in orders and curses and not much else. He is known to scorn the knightly values of chivalry, and this has earned him a reputation for ruthlessness, but the simple fact is that Rickard Black always takes the tactical choice, and always gets the job done.

Bio:

Forkbeard started killing as a beardless youth. He was lucky, he was good, and he was always fighting: The Duke of Geroia rewarded Forkbeard with the command of a company of scouts. When the old Duke died his son led an army across the frozen wastelands to the fat pickings of Calradia.  Hundreds died, frozen and starving, on a 100-league hell march.
When they finally arrived in Calradia, the Duke ordered Forkbeard inland to lay waste the villages around Khudan.  Forkbeard, mercilessly efficient, burned, looted and destroyed across a wide path until four warbands converged on his company as they were torching the village of Ismirala.  Outnumbered hugely, Forkbeard was the last man standing at the end of a day-long fighting retreat.
He was taken prisoner, and sold to the salt mines as slave labour.  Escape was a simple affair.
In the years that followed he moved from one mercenary company to another, building up his fortune, spending his gold on weapons and armour, stealing horses, and gaining a fearsome reputation.
He wasn't as young as he used to be, but he had over twenty years' experience in fighting and killing to compensate.....

Forkbeard is an older warrior, with streaks of grey in his red beard.  Many years ago, he was a company commander for the Duke of Geroia, leading an elite unit of scouts in the wars between Geroia and the Northlands.  He had fought his way to this prestigious command in over a decade of blood and ruthlessness.  Starting as a common spearman in a band of mercenaries, he was lucky, he was good, and he was never far from the smell of blood: The Duke rewarded good men, and Forkbeard found himself rising through the ranks.
Then, the old Duke died, and his son decided to lead an expedition across the frozen wastelands to the fat pickings of Calradia.  Hundreds died, frozen and starving, as the stubborn young Duke bullied and flogged his veterans the hundred leagues through the ice-bound hills to descend on the Vaegir lands between Wercheg and Reyvadin.  By sheer force of personality Forkbeard kept his company together, and they were the vanguard of the remnant when they finally found themselves in Calradia.
The Duke ordered Forkbeard to take his men inland and lay waste to the villages around Khudan to divide the Vaegir forces.  Forkbeard, mercilessly efficient, burned, looted and destroyed across a wide path for weeks.  Then, his luck ran out.  Four warbands converged on his company as they were torching the village of Ismirala.  Outnumbered hugely, over three hundred and fifty Vaegirs against his ninety, Forkbeard ordered his men to a fighting retreat, hoping to gain the defensible passes that led further south into the Khergit lands.  Forkbeard fought in the front rank all day, and by noon his shield was splintered, his axe-haft black with blood, and his javelins all spent.  Still he fought as his men died around  him and the Vaegir corpses lined their retreat like cobblestones.  The Vaegirs were too many, though, and it was still an hour before dusk when his last few men stood up back to back, their weapons chipped and blunted, their shields shivered and battered, surrounded by the Vaegirs.
Forkbeard threw down his axe and walked forward, challenging the Vaegirs to put up a champion: Not for the fight, for he could see it was lost, but for his mens' lives.  If he won, his men would be allowed to walk away into the mountains and take their chances.  If he lost, they would surrender.
A dark, fierce-faced warrior dismounted to oppose him, bowing respectfully.  Forkbeard took a two-handed axe from one of his men, and faced the Vaegir champion.  The fight was short and brutal: Forkbeard had killed more often than he had eaten and was in no mood to mess around.  in barely a minute he had crushed the man's ribcage and slammed him, mortally wounded, to the ground.
The Vaegirs honoured the pact though, and Forkbeard watched his men flee into the mountains.  He was taken prisoner though, and sold to the salt mines as slave labour.  A week after arriving he walked out, wearing the clothes of the overseer he had strangled to make his escape.
In the years that followed he moved from one mercenary company to another, building up his fortune slowly, spending his gold on weapons and armour, caring for his horses, and plotting vengeance against the Vaegirs who had enslaved him, hopefully garnished with the head of the Duke of Geroia for his folly in murdering the cream of the Geroian military in his botched campaign.
He began to gain a reputation, and caravan masters would pay extra if he were in their escort.  Some of the Swadian Lords offered him the chance to swear fealty, but he declined politely.  He would be no man's war-hound.
With the fresh eruption of war among the Calradian nations, Forkbeard found himself in Sargoth, where he hoped his skill with weapons could win him a tidy sum at the tournament.  He wasn't as young as he used to be, but he had over twenty years' experience in fighting and killing to compensate.....

Name: Duman Ashwa

Duman is the third son of Demichief Ashwa in the jungle Kingdoms. Has third son Duman was given to the priests. Duman found his calling in the art of catching slaves for sacrifices to feed the raising sun Duman fights with a staff and cross bow. Duman was not satiated with his Modest position and requested a place in conquest army to gain lands of his own. His request was denied Duman's father told him the third son may not up stage the first, become the first son or levee the kingdom. Such a thing was common but not to Duman taste. The next week Duman found passage to a place called Calradia. He spent a year working has a man hunter learning the language and customs. Now he raised a war band and became a mercenary ready to become a lord once he claims new lands for his king employer.

Biography:

Aethrod is not a noble person.  He's changed his name twice, and is blamed for most of the crimes on Vaegir territory.  True or not, he claims to never have taken an innocent mans life, and considers himself a patriotic citizen, several times bringing his band or renegades to the assistance of his faction, when it is threatened.  In times of peace, however, most lords must be careful when he is in the vicinity, due to his daring personality, and willingness to challenge a lord.  Born and rasied in the slums of Reyvadin, he learned how to use a bow at an early age, and ran away from home a 14.  Now, at 32, his archery skills are near perfect, and though he can't ride a horse well, he can hit one at the furthest of distances.  Tough as nails, and sharp as a hawk, he is a true local legend.

Name: Agathon Bjorn

Bio

  Agathon Bjorn was born on small village near the north pole. He’s father was an excellent fighter and was a former vassal of Ragnar the nord king. He taught Agathon to fight with an axe ever since he was very young so that one day he could be fighting at the kings side like his father did.
  One day, when Agathon was already 23 years old, the village was plundered and burnt to the ground. Agathon managed to hide himself and when the raid was over he looked for is father. Agathon found him near their house and at his dying breath the father told him that those weren’t raiders as Agathon thought, they were a Vaegir army and that he needed to travel to Calradia to warn the nord king of what happened. Agathon’s father died there that day and he swore that he would avenge this death even if it was the last thing he would do. And so Agathon travelled immediately to Calradia seeking for the great nord’s king help. When he arrived at Tihr by boat he payed his last 100 denars to travel with a caravan to Sargoth were the king was at. At the arrival he immediately asked to see the king and when he finally managed to convince the guard that he was the son of Lord Gautrek Bjorn, his father, and that it was very important that he talked to the king the guard took him to Ragnar and so he explained what happened. Ragnar was furious about what happened because the Nordic and the Vaegirs were at peace for many years. He kept Agathon in a safe room until he confirmed what had happened at the village and when he did, he declared war on the Vaegirs and made Agathon lord so that he could avenge his father. Agathon gathered a great army and marched towards the Vaegir villages and castles seeking for his revenge.

Dominigo De Valiente


Short Bio

Dominigo was born from a wealthy merchant, and became a good barter in his teen years. He could make someone buy some of his cheap linnen for outrageous prices. It was even said that he once convinced a knight to sell his freedom and become a slave for a good price. As he grew up, he became a wealthy merchant. The merchants of his town became the most wealthy and powerfull class expelling the nobility. A new warrior class emerged: towns were from now on not defended by only militias, but also by wealthy merchants able to afford the expensive equipment. They didn't only defend towns, but also went on merchantile voyages in group. When he came to Calradia, he was informed that the best spices came from Tulga, so he went forward by himself to check if the rumours were true. Dominigo left with a bunch of Mercenary cavalry and some crossbowmen for his protection. He did not realise that the Khergits were hostile to any newcomer, and he got ambushed by a larger force of Khergits. Luckily for him, a Rhodok scouting party heard of it, and has come to aid the Merchant.

Desmond

Raised on remote islands untouched by the civilized world as a young boy, Desmond learned how to scrounge many of the islands hidden bounties. He traversed among the many islands that congregated in these waters with ease. Then one day as he was rowing out to the next island to retrieve more food a strange and large boat had come and stole him away as a galley slave. Strengthened by the years of toil a mutinous first mate asked the strongest of the galley slaves to assist him in taking over the ship. In exchange the sailor gave them freedom and a place on the crew. Desmond quickly took this offer after years of forced labor. After many more years of mutiny and scheming he became a shipmaster of a new galley named “Lion of the Tide” and was a successful pirating ship. Of small renown but great sword skill Desmond cut through most foes who crossed him, and knew when to raise sails and flee. After a freak hurricane Desmond crashed into what appeared to be a crest of land near a small village. A local fisherman claiming to be a ‘Nord’ told him where he was. Now completely poor he carried his recently rusted bastard sword behind him to this strange place known as ‘Calradia’.

Background:
The second son of a minor noble living near Uxhal, Hegen was educated in the art of war and single combat.  After being knighted he served as a paid knight in the army of the lord of Uxhal and fought against the Vaegir before leading a group of outriders that defeated a Khergit raid near Amere. The ensuing counter raid and the following two campaigns earned him glory and fame as a warrior. Unfortunately he lost any chance of further prestige when peace was declared and he was discharged. With no hope of inheriting and his skills at war languishing in peace, he assembled other young warriors and set out as a mercenary captain. He now hopes to take advantage of the fact that Calradia never lacks warring states in need of mercenaries.

May I suggest you relax a bit?
We are in a game forum, aren't we? Even if this game is the most important thing you got in your life, try to imagine it can be rather different for other people... well just trying to get a friendly sign from a lovely gamers community.
 
I'm really excited that a freestyle quick battle feature is being added, since I know I'm not the only one who's been hoping for it since M&B 0.623. I think it's also great that you're letting the community leave their mark on the game like this. I know we're already kind of doing that with the beta testing and all, but this is a more concrete thing, which is why I'm jumping at the chance just like everyone else.

The way I think of this is that if these characters are meant to cover more or less all possible scenarios and troop types, since they're the limited selection of player choices for a nearly unlimited number of possible quick battles, then they also need to cover all of the truly key character types playable in the game, because those are the things most people are going to want to play as in these quick battles.

So what I did was draw up a list of ten key character types, assign levels, think of quick bio concepts for each, generate matching faces, stat and equip the characters, take pictures and finalize the backstories. The stats on each of these characters are more or less just as they would be as PCs in SP adventure mode, since I simply added xp to them and assigned points in ways that made sense to me. I gave them some extra proficiencies on top of the level points to make up for the lack of actual combat experience. Gear was chosen to fit both aesthetic criteria and to match the character's concept and level. So rest assured that while there's a lot of them, I've put some real thought and effort into all of these characters.

As an end result, each of them represents a character archetype that I feel needs to be included in the quick battle selection. A few of them overlap to some extent with past submissions, but none fully, so I figured I might as well post the lot. Hopefully at least one of them will be selected. Devs should also feel free to mix and match ideas from these characters with some of the more exotic ones posted before, if they feel mine aren't quite exciting enough, but still have some merit. :smile:

Konrad, level 24 heavy footman





Bio: Konrad is a professional mercenary from the distant land of Balion, far beyond the vast western ocean. Having spent most of his years on campaign and seen countless battles, Konrad has grown to love his life as a soldier of fortune. Though he once had his nose flattened by a mace blow and has received many wounds, he has nevertheless survived this harsh existence through the strength of his arm, innate cunning and pure luck. Hearing of the lucrative career opportunities awaiting a man of his talents in Calradia, Konrad chartered a vessel and crossed the sea with his men in search of new wars to fight in. A sellsword with no ties to any of the Calradian states, he is more than happy to offer his services to any lord with a fat enough coin-purse.

Sverre, level 21 medium footman





Bio: Sverre is one of the so-called sea raiders –  freebooters and lawless men from the icy realm of Jumne beyond the North Sea, also said to be the ancestral home of the Nords. Already as a young man he has been along on many raids against both his distant cousins in the Wercheg region and the Vaegirs. However, Sverre was always a sharp lad, and it didn't take him long to see that Calradia was a far more prosperous land than his own, and that he could have a better life here than among his own people. During a raid on Jayek, Sverre stole away while his comrades were busy looting the village and taking captives. Passing himself off as a yokel from the Chalbek mountains, Sverre quickly built up a reputation for himself as a fierce fighter, and he now seeks his fortune at the head of a mercenary band.

Bio: Growing up with one of the nomadic tribes deep in the desert beyond Sarranid lands, Gamara learned early on how to hunt with sling and spear. Life is not easy for an adventuring young woman, and Gamara had to learn the ways of Calradia quickly. Bio: Hailing from Charnye, in the far reaches of the Vaegir tundra, Borislav is a hunter. For all of his life he has tracked the beasts of the wild for their meat and fur, living off the land just as his forefathers had done in happier days, before the endless wars. Now, the game is quick to take fright from the constant sounds of battle, and the wanton slaughter of animals by soldiers has left empty those forests that have not been burnt down. Facing starvation, Borislav chose to turn his great skill with bow and spear, learned from hunting stag, wolf, and bear, to the practice of hunting men, and his steady hand and keen eye have claimed many lives. Borislav does not care much for the disputes of kingdoms, and is only really interested in keeping himself and his men fed.

Bio: Stavros was born in the independent city-state of Zendar, and spent much of his adult life serving in the town watch under the famous constable Hareck. Stavros' leadership and prowess were instrumental in ridding the area of the dreaded river pirates, but even he was powerless against the calamity that befell the city. When Zendar was razed to the ground by a great horde of sea raiders, Stavros fled the burning city in a crowd of refugees. After a brief period of wandering and odd jobs, he found a place in a mercenary company, eventually rising to become its leader due to his dedication and tactical aptitude. He now devotes most of his efforts to working with manhunters and local authorities against the sea raiders and other outlaws, trying to keep the land safe for travelers.

Bio: Ayyif enlisted in the military as a young man. A fine rider, he was trained as one of the Sultanate's mounted skirmishers, and he threw himself into his training, showing remarkable skill with the jarid. It didn't take long for him to regret his rashness, for beginning from his first battle, he began to comprehend with increasing horror just how recklessly the Emirs spent the lives of their light horsemen. They were often treated as expendable chaff, useful for drawing missile fire while the mamlukes moved in for their charge. Realizing that he would not live long if he tried to serve out his full term in the army, Ayyif deserted one night with a few friends, taking his horse and weapons with him. He now plies his trade as a free agent, serving warring kingdoms and desert bandits alike.

Erdene, level 24 horse archer





Bio: A child of the great Khergit steppe, Erdene was practically born in the saddle. She had little passion for the life of a herder, dreaming instead of fighting for the Khan, and learning horse archery by hunting rabbits. That dream died with her family when they were attacked by steppe bandits, and the 16-year-old Erdene was kidnapped and forced to live as a camp follower. One night, she managed to slit the throat of a drunk bandit, and killed half a dozen of them with his bow. Duly impressed by this feat, the bandits freed her from bondage and let her ride with them. Erdene's many years as a brigand hardened her, and finally her ruthlessness and knack for killing spurred the bandits to make her their leader. She now proves herself daily, on raids against villages and caravans.

Bio: Former commander of a company of Rhodok sharpshooters, Fabian has mastered his weapon. In the service of the king, he took part in many campaigns against the Swadians, shooting their horses out from under them even as they charged the Rhodok pike formations. However, Fabian saw much good in the Swadians' practice of waging war on horseback, and took it upon himself to learn horsemanship, adding to it his skill at crossbows to create a new way of fighting. Unfortunately, the Rhodok lords refused to hear his proposals for wider application of this technique, clinging instead to a rigid, centuries-old doctrine of infantry warfare. Frustrated, Fabian decided to leave the army as soon as he was free to strike out on his own. Many now fear his bolts that can strike so swiftly and without warning.

Bio:
As a young boy, James Alexander grew up in the land Utopy (To the east of Caladria) and became very academic and a very quick learner. His father, a rich merchant, tougt him trading, and how to manage his money, and his oncle, a smith and captain of the local lord, tougt him how to make armour and weapon and how to use them. He grew up, peacefully, as a smith and selling his products to any and everyone, and becoming very popular in his town. He married a young noble lady of the name of Rachela, and decised to travel west with her and a handful of servants until they would find the perfect location to install build a house, start a familly, and assure an income to live on. Crossing the montains they arrived in the desert of Caladria, and seeing montains to the north, they headed north. But a week later near the village of Dirigh Aban they were attacked by a kergit raiding party, Rachela was riden down before him, and his servants abused of and excuted without mercy, he was able to kill couple of them with his sword before being struck by two light arrows, but James Antenor, unlike the others, survived his wounds, and swore to his lover to destroy, and erase all kergits from this world, and the world with them if it got in his way of vengence! After a couple of years of being a mercenary in Vaegir territory, and being in many battles (the most famous being Ismirala Castle, Tibault Castle, the battle of the twin montains) he found love again, with the beautiful Angelique, and had a child with her, Elouan. But the couple not being married her father proclaimed that the child was a bastard, and chased him from town sword in his hand. James Alexander, outside of town, killed his step-father in a duel, and rode off west, knowing that he could no longer stay after such an act. He stayed a mercenary in Swadian territory and after the defending the walls of Ryibelet castle,slaying many men in the process, became known as the "hundred man slayer", the "spear cracker", the "Rhodok wraith" and many more over-valourising names. Oviously such popularity came to the ears of all, and to please his people, and hearing that Princess Issola was gaining popularity in the North, King Harlaus invited James Alexander Antenor to dine with him, and in front of the town, proclaimed him knight and protector of Swadia the next day, giving to him 100 of his best knights to command, his first mission to gain control in the north...
But not forgotting his promess his beloved Rachela, and his power in Caladria, who knows what James Alexander Antenor is capable of?

Derkan Skelgar:

Born into a noble family in the feudal country of Tyrve, Derkan began training as a knight from a young age. However, when he was 15 years old, the King of Tyrve was deposed in a fierce rebellion. The lords who supported the King were spared but ordered to pay a heavy fine for their lands. Unable to pay the fine, Derkan’s family had their lands seized by the new King until they can raise the money for the fine. Derkan and his elder brother set out to make their names as warriors. Derkan chose to ride for Calradia and quickly earned renown as a skilled and ruthless mercenary commander. Six years on, he has fought for all the kingdoms of Calradia at one time or another and combined all their fighting styles into his own unique style. However, he has grown used to power and still needs more money as the fine increases each year. Utterly merciless and used to holding power over others, Derkan will fight anyone and anything for a chance to recover his family’s lands.

Vita:

Noone knows where Killian Dorr comes from, or even who he is. Rumors say that he appeared the first time over ten years ago in a battle, stabbing the general of the enemy army into the back and disappearing even before the bodyguards could turn around. Since this time regularly reports appear, where witnesses claim to have seen him for a blink of an eye or two. Each time an army commander is being killed mysteriously, although he was sorrounded by bodyguards, and each time a lord is found dead in his chamber, there always are people claiming, it was the work of Killian Dorr.

There is a Sergeant in Rivacheg, who claims having met Killian Dorr and having survived it, whereas his five subordinate soldiers didn't. One day he and his men sorrunded a suspicious person, sneaking around the castle. They pointed their bows at him, so he gave up. As they searched him they found a bunch of short weapons, ideal for murder and assassinations. For safety's sake the sergeant told his men to arrest the suspect, then he left and told his lord about the happenings. When they entered the guardroom they found all the five guards dead, stabbed to death. In a corner there was a bloody, pointed bovine bone, the same bone which was lying in the hay in the cell the suspect was locked in this morning. The lord didn't believe the sergeant's story, and supposed that the suspect probably had fellows who had freed him.

An interesting fact of the sergeant's story is the description he made of the suspect: tall, skinny, with small, evil eyes, moving incredibly fast and smoothly like a cat. The same description, other witnesses told about the mysterious assassin...


Comment:

I know these aren't typical stats for a character lvl 24. But I tried it and balanced it carefully, so he is as mighty as a normal lvl 24 warrior character. He has incredible offensive skills, but is very vulnerable if he draws attention. In 1 vs. 1 he will brobably cut you into pieces, but as soon as he gets the attention even of two or more looters, everything he can do is to run, because his light equipment offers almost no protection. He doesn't do too much damage with his strikes, but he is that fast, that he will cover you with a heap of blows, letting you no chance to react. If he seems too strong to you anyway, simply remove his shield and give him a dagger or something, an then he will be completely vulnerable. I assume it would be pretty fun to play with him, as he is a real good "lord hunter", but no warrior for open fielded battles.  :cool:

Angelo Alighieri


Short Bio

All that people know of him is that he once fought in the Rhodok regular army, when it was still an army that fought like any other; without any sense of tactics. After Veluca was attacked by the Khergits again, Angelo found it was time to form a militia: a group of ordinary people, like craftsmen, lower merchants or even the homeless; people who reside in the town. Spearmen were easy to train, and so were crossbowmen. Angelo built an effective militia army, that in theory could be rebuilt if it was annihilated, due to the short but efficient training times. A pikewall with large shields to soak up arrows, and supported by crossbowmen who could shoot right through a knight's thick helmet. As the time went by, the militia army transformed into a professional army.
Now Angelo has the chance to prove what his new army is worth now that a Khergit army has crossed the lands again to seek for plunder...

A former soldier of Swadia, Deldrim served as a crossbowman in Count Tredian's private army. He witnessed firsthand the hardship of war and the cowardice of those who wage them. His battalion was part of a vanguard that was ambushed. Rather than aid his men, Count Tredian cut his losses and left them for dead, turning his army around. Deldrim held position, defending the soldiers falling back until the last bolt in his quiver was spent. He is a valiant warrior and a trustworthy companion.

Bio: Frothmar the Furious was once a high ranking military commander to a large, northern, island nation far across the sea. He was acting as captain of a ship of war about to raid an important enemy trade route when a great storm suddenly struck his vessel. Battling with the wind and rain, Frothmar was swept out far into uncharted waters, and as his ship finally succumbed to the crashing waves he dived into the water and swam blindly, following instinct alone, until he landed upon the land known as Calradia. Taking the initiative, and being the military commander he was, Frothmar soon began to assemble followers and turned himself into a famed and (more so than the former) feared mercenary captain. Since he favored the axe and often drove himself into a berserker frenzy upon the battlefield, hence the name. Frothmar’s dearest wish is to return to his homeland, but to do this; he will need money and manpower, most easily acquired during the spoils of war. . .

If I messed up with the pictures any, although I don't think I did, ma bad it's my first time using image shack. Speaking of which, lately my pictures have been loading ridiculously slowly, when all the ones around me are loading almost instantly, for me anyways. Don't know why.

Also, level 20 character may be a bit overpowered, I don't know, since he is without a shield I figured he would need mad ironflesh skills and armor since he will probably get singled out by archers. But feel free to change it anyway you like.  :grin:
