I once wrote this to post it on the TWC forums, I figured I might post it here aswell for those interested:
A Scythian tale
The beginning, the reign of king zipoetes
The year was 270 BC, a man with a deep stare in his eyes, the kind of stare you see on men when they ponder on important and hard issues, was looking at a map on a table. Age was beginning to take it’s toll on this man. His hair was turning grey, as was his mustache. This man, would influence the fate of the known world for many generations to come, he was zipoetes, the king of the Scythians.
For many years the steppe people had been living nomadic lives and fought each other ferociously over small pieces of land. Now under this man, who had turned 50 on this day that would mark the beginning of a storm that would last for many years to come. The steppe people had united and called themselves the scythii, they were master archers and horsemen thanks to a life of hunting and fighting. But now they had build settlements and united under a king. King zipoetes, a lively man, with great commanding skills and a sharp eye for governing. As all good Scythians he liked a drink, but he didn’t drink in excess, no this man was more of a social drinker. The only negative feature about this man was that he was known throughout the land as a bloodthirsty man. (although for a Scythian this was nothing out of the ordinary)
Now on this day, this warm day, the king looked at a map of his recently founded kingdom and after a long pondering gaze at the royal treasury and list of details of the settlements in his kingdom of warriors, he concluded: our nation is doomed unless we act, our neighboring kingdoms have built many things like roads and farms, we will need those things to feed our people and to quickly transport our armies because we are surrounded by too many potential foes, to the east are those detestable Parthians, they only care about gold, and will attack us as soon as they think they can make a profit, to the south are the Armenians, horse lords like us, combined with hat strange formation those barbarians call the phalanx and strange armour for horses, the word for those units is catapracht if I’m not mistaken. Further south are the kingdoms of Pontus and Seleucia, and rumors have reached my ears of a kingdom called Egypt that could rival the mighty warriors of Scythia when it comes to aggression.
To the west are the Thracians, Germans, Dacians and those Greeks, who have true contempt in their eyes when they look at us.
The king looked at his generals and said: our mighty warriors are undefeatable in battle, yet we do not have enough of them, we could always hire those sarmatians into our armies but we will need gold to do this. Therefore we shall pause from waging wars! Let the men put down the sword, the spear and the bow, and pick up the hammer.
And so, in his first year as king, the great king had connected all his settlements by a new invention called a road, and introduced religion as a way to give his people an even better sense of unity, the great demi goad kolasky was now being worshipped throughout the kingdom.
the first battles and expansion : the wars against the rebels.
Scythia was not only surrounded by kingdoms, no! Three independent and very hostile provinces lay next to the kingdom, and there were rumors of an Amazon city to the north ruled by ferocious woman who where unmatched in aggression and bravery. And so it came to be that in his second year as a ruler, an army under the command of captain Scyles appeared on the doorstep of campus scythii the capital of Scythia.
Zipoetes realized he had to fight the enemy, if he wouldn’t his people would think he was a weak king and would no longer follow him.
So in the winter of 269 BC the 2 armies met to the north of campus scythii. Zipoetes brought along his trusted bodyguards and 3 units of Scythian horse archers, in total he had an army of 227 men. He did not know what kind of units he would be facing, but he did now the enemy greatly outnumbered him with an army of 442 men.
Before the battle started zipoetes spoke the now legendary words: “today is a grim day for our enemies, they have to face brave warriors such as us”
He decided to split up his army, even tough he could have chosen for the advantage of picking a defensive position, he decided to outflank the enemy and make his archers shower those fools who defied Scythia with arrows.
The enemy had positioned on top of a hill and consisted of 2 units of archers, 2 units of peasants, and a general and his bodyguard. Ziopetes had a tactic he loved using, in this tactic all the horse archers would form a circle and keep on galloping thus constantly peppering the enemy with arrows, as this took a huge toll on the enemies morale, their general decided to charge the closest unit of horse archers, Zipoetes the brilliant commander that he was, anticipated this and charged the general in his flank, and instantly killed him. Soon all the barbarians ran and if they would have had tails, those tails would have been in between their legs!
This would become a joyful day for the old king, not only did this battle make him famous throughout his kingdom as a superior commander, but on this day prince Palacus had reached the age of 16. he was a man now, and would soon command his first army and begin to learn everything that could be learned about warfare, and governing.
At the same time general Skunxa had conquered the settlement of vicus vendae for the Scythian kingdom as retaliation for the attack on Scythia that same day.
In the mean time travelers had brought news that Greece was now at war with some unknown barbarian tribe called Rome. Surely the Greeks would be either weakend or distracted for a while and therefore a possible threat to Scythia was now gone. As for those Romans, Zipoetes told his concerned generals, if we haven’t heared of them, then they are nothing compared to us so we shall not worry about them.
The Scythian settlements all had roads connecting them and a shrine to the demi god kolasky to unify them, but Zipoetes realized that this was not enough, more required structures needed to be built. Unfortunately he lacked the funds to start these building projects and so he did what any desperate king would do, he sent out his armies to conquer rich settlements. Prince Palacus was sent out to conquer the once Greek colony of Chersoneses, a settlement founded by Greek colonists, but long since left behind by the Greeks and now an independent city. On his way to the city, the prince fought an army sent out by the city and overcame them so easily that we shall not go into detail about that battle here, what is important tough is that the prince became known as a brave and skilled general, who was very able when it came to attacking, and who seemed untouched by fear.
In the coming years, Zipoetes added domus dulcis domus to the kingdom of Scythia, started extensive building programs to give his people, ports, farms, traders, roads, shrines blacksmiths and so on. And he succeeded in negotiating alliances with the kingdom of Pontus and the mighty kingdom of Parthia. Also, he successfully negotiated trade rights with these kingdoms as well as with the small kingdom of Armenia.
And as he died peacefully on that sad day of 259 BC at the age of 61 leaving behind 2 sons and 2 daughters, the nation of the Scythians wept and mourned for the death of the great king who gave them a country and a better standard of living.
The reign of Partatua
And so, in the year 259 BC Zipoetes oldest son Partatua inherited the nation of Scythia, little was known about this man before he had become king and many people had expected Palacus to become king as he was Zipoetes favorite son. And no one had ever heard of this Partatua. We know now that he was a man blessed with commanding skills and a great sense of loyalty, and governing. This great sense of loyalty and his belief in the so well known Spartan lifestyle, might explain why he was such a drunkard and bloodthirsty man, since rumors of his wife’s relations with many different men had spread throughout the kingdom, and psychologists today would claim that he did not know how to handle this and therefore took his frustration out on others
Just like the great king Zipoetes, Partatua realized that in order to become a powerful nation, Scythia had to develop some sort of economy and culture since culture is what binds a people together, and gold is what drives them to battlefield.
Partatua realized that, because of the rumors about his wife’s affairs, the warriors of Scythia would never follow him into battle unless it would be absolutely necessary. After all who would follow a man that can not even manage his household in to battle, surely he wouldn’t be able to manage something as comprehensive as a Scythian army!
This was Parpatua’s curse to be forever in the shadow of his father the great king Zipoetes, and the only means of stepping out of that shadow (glorious conquest) taken away by his unfaithful wife. He would be nothing more then an ordinary king for eternity because of matters out of his hands.
After long consideration by the bonfire while looking at his children (whilst wondering if they where really his children) he decided he would become known as the Partatua the explorer!
He send out his diplomats to all corners of the world, and managed to secure an alliance with the sworn enemy: Thrace!
War against the amazons
Then one day 1 of his diplomats returned and said: I have found the legendary city of the amazons! Partatua, thinking of those amazons and of his own wife decided that this would be the opportunity he had been waiting for in his married life! He would take revenge on those unfaithful woman by conquering the Amazon city and wiping out those woman who defy the rules of nature and are the true example of everything his unfaithful wife stands for.
He would ride into the city himself and kill them all, unfortunately he was in a settlement far away from the Amazon city and so he started marching towards the settlement of campus sarmatia, since according to his diplomat, he had to cross the nearby river and follow a small path through the northern woods to reach the legendary Amazon city!
Partatua began on a long march to reach campus sarmatae and built many watch towers on the way over there. On his way he fought many small armies consisting of thieves and robbers and he hired many mercenaries and as he was about to enter the forest for the march towards the legendary Amazon city, Thrace betrayed the good king and attacked the capital of Scythia witch defense would now be in the hands of his 18 year old nephew Ara.
The siege of campus scythii.
The Thracians had send 1 of their princes with an army of 1105 men to besiege the settlement of campus Schytii. Ara who had only 323 men under his command consisting of 2 units of archer warband and 3 units of Scythian horse archers knew that he would have to make full use of the archery skills of his men and set up his men close to the wooden wall surrounding the settlement and he himself marched out of the settlement and waited in front of the gate, while shouting insults towards the enemy so rude that we will not go into detail about the nature and content of these insults! These insults enraged the Thracian prince so severely that he ordered his men to march forward and bring him the head of that insolent Scythian!
As the Thracians advanced Ara smiled and mumbled: fools! Prepare to die. And he ordered his warriors to unleash a rain of arrows so massively that the sun was blocked and a dark cloud in the air and an even darker shadow on the ground seemed to move towards the Thracian soldiers who could only stare in horror as the dark shadow and cloud moved towards them until the cloud dispersed and brought many Thracians to the afterlife with each volley!
This went on until the Thracians retreated, they had lost 562 soldiers whereas Ara had lost none of his men. One would think that this was the end of the siege but, the Thracian prince still enraged by the horrible insults Ara had shouted towards him before the battle, decided that they would not leave until he had Ara’s head on a plate.
And so, the second battle in the siege of campus Schtytii was about to begin..
Ara decided that since his plan worked so great the last time, he would repeat it. So he marched out the gate with his bodyguards and started insulting the enemy. The Thracian prince however anticipated this and had stationed some musicians next to him to ensure he would never hear any of those insults. at the same time he sent his peltasts and militia cavalry forward to counter the Scythian arrows with javelins. Ara knew that this would not make him lose the battle but he refused to let his men be killed that easily and personally charged the Thracian peltasts and cavalry and fought them with the kind of bravery you only encounter in those epic tales of great heroes. After a very fierce fight Ara had only 6 bodyguards left but managed to fill the heart of the Thracian peltasts and militia cavalry with fear and they ran like the cowards they were. Whilst Ara chased them till the outer edges of the battlefield. “look at that one of his soldiers said 7 Scythian horsemen chase 60 fleeing Thracians, the great king Zipoetes must be smiling from the heavens on his grandson with pride.”
After finishing of those fleeing pests, Ara turned his attention on the Thracian infantry and prince, in the battle with the militia cav the Thracian prince had tried to flank Ara and as a result Ara managed to almost kill him. In fact the Thracian prince lost his entire bodyguard unit.
While Ara turned and charged the enemy he had eyes only for the Thracian prince, and decided to blindly charge him, some call this bravery others call this idiocy. His soldiers still inside the settlement saw what their brave general did and immediately sallied out of the settlement and charged the Thracian infantry. Not 1 Thracian survived this great battle and Ara had lost 101 men as he wept for the loss of his men he scolded the remaining for sallying out of the settlement. “you fools” he said, “but lord Ara” his men replied before he could finish, “we couldn’t stay inside while you had all the fun, we wanted to be able to tell our children: we fought alongside the great Ara on that day! Not: we watched the great Ara fight whilst we where too cowardly to fight”
Ara smiled and realized that the foundation stones laid by the great Zipoetes on witch his uncle Partatua was building, would play a significant role in the world, and he had just contributed to this great destiny.
Partatua becomes: Partatua the fool
During all this, Partatua had done nothing, he continued his march towards the Amazon city determined to conquer it. And as he ventured into the woods and came closer and closer to the city, Parthia betrayed the alliance and attacked the poorly defended city of campus alani. Luckily for the city they where able to pay off the attackers. And still Partatua did nothing, he seemed obsessed with the Amazon city.
And as he almost reached his destination, and saw the signs of a settlement in the far horizon, screams emerged from the woods, so ferociously that they struck fear in the hearts of even the bravest Scythian warriors, where these human cries? Suddenly the sound of thundering hooves and cracking wheels emerged and the fabled amazons appeared and without warning attacked king Partatua, he had his barbarian mercenaries and hoplite mercenaries stand fast covered by sarmatian mercenaries and barbarian cavalry mercenaries. Whilst Scythian horse archers formed their so effective circle. As the amazons in their chariots charged at the Scythians, something odd happened, Partatua became enraged and got into a screaming frenzy and whilst screaming: “this is for every time I had to look at my children and wonder if they were really mine or not, you adulteress harlet” he charged the approaching Amazons head on. Without fear for his own life the king and his bodyguard unit managed to destroy 4 of the 5 chariot units of the Amazon armies but he wouldn’t stop and when his bodyguards were all dead he continued his charge and attacked the last chariots, the soldiers who were there at the battle stated: “the king went mad, and as we hurried to reach and assist him we saw him swing his sword at one of the chariots and miss it, after that an arrow hit him in the heart and he died there with an enraged look and tears of despair in his eyes. Screaming like a mad man: take the city and wipe them out!”
And so king Partatua who could not escape the shadow of his father and was robbed of any credibility by his wife, died in battle without ever taking the city of the amazons, he would be remembered as the king who could not manage his own household and did nothing when the kingdom was attacked by 2 nations, even the conquest of the Amazon city would never be his accomplishment as it was his soldiers that simply marched on, and took the city to fulfill a dying mans last wish and to add it to the kingdom of Scythia.
